Go off the beaten track in Madhya Pradesh

9th Apr 2013

Wildlife and culture enthusiasts with a passion for India need look no further than Madhya Pradesh for tailor-made holidays.

Set in the heart of Central India, it is perfect for specialist tours for holidaymakers with a deep love of historic, cultural and religious sites.

Its largest city is Indore, with myriad shopping malls, cinema halls and shiva temples.

The capital city, Bhopal, is renowned for its beautiful lakes, especially the Upper and Lower ones.

Other Bhopal 'must-sees' are Van Vihar, and the museum, Manav Sangrahalaya, dedicated to highlighting folk and tribal cultures.

From Bhopal, you can travel to the historical Sanchi Stupa, beautifully maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Walking into this heritage site is like time travelling back to ancient India.

Next stop is Bhimbetka, a series of caves and rock shelters famous for its pre-historic cave paintings showing scenes from everyday life and depictions of animals such as deer and elephants.

Bandhavgarh National Park was once the hunting ground of the Maharajas of Rewa.

This is the home of the tiger. In fact, Madhya Pradesh's own tourism website calls itself 'Land Of The Striped Stalker'.

Chital, neelghai, wild boar, and numerous species of birds can also be seen here.
