The cost of hotel extras such as room service and mini bar products can be extortionate in some countries but this is not the case in South Africa, Egypt, India and Turkey.
According to a TripAdvisor survey, a club sandwich in a hotel in Cape Town costs £4.11, whereas it could set a hotel guest back more than four times this (£18.67) in Zurich.
The cost of a packet of peanuts in a Cape Town hotel was £1.20, but the cost was as much as seven times higher in other countries.
While Sharm el Sheikh, Mumbai and Istanbul were among the best-value destinations for hotel extras, the same could not be said of Paris and Stockholm which rank among the priciest.
TripAdvisor also compared the cost of a bottle of water, a can of Coke, a mini bottle of vodka and dry cleaning at four-star hotels for the purposes of this hotel extras price comparison survey.
The collective cost of these items or services came to £12.61 in Cape Town, £15.27 in Sharm el Sheikh and £16.27 in Mumbai. The cost of this bundle of extras came to £44.17 in Paris, £43.97 on Stockholm and were also costly in Oslo, Helsinki and Tokyo.
Emma Shaw, of TripAvisor, said: "For those willing to shell out a bit more on flights, it seems there is money to be saved in south-east Asia or Africa."
