More tourists taking holidays in Tibet

Tibet continues to attract an increasing number of tourists, with a record 10 million domestic and foreign visitors already this year.

Tourism authorities revealed that up to 30 November the region had witnessed a 22.6% year-on-year increase to 10.34 million visits.

Tibet is a remote territory in the north-eastern Himalayas known as the "roof of the world".

People on tailor made tours and holidays to Tibet have a wealth of historic attractions to choose from. Among the heritage sites wowing the holidaying crowds are Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and the Zhaxi Lhunbo Monastery.

The area is currently on track to keep pace with the average 30% annual increase in the number of visitors over the past five years.

Wang Songping, an official with the region's tourism bureau, declared the boom in tourism had led to revenues in the sector increasing by 33.9% year-on-year to 12.4 billion yuan.
