Budget airline easyJet will launch a new flight service between Manchester and Moscow from next year.
The airline said it will operate four flights a week on the UK to Russia service from March 2013.
A 180-seat Airbus A320 will be used for the Manchester to Moscow flights, with easyJet anticipating more than 60,000 passengers will travel on the service in its first 12 months.
EasyJet chief executive Carolyn McCall said a direct flight from the north of England to Russia is "long overdue" given Russia is "rich in culture and history" while also boasting a "fast-growing economy".
McCall added: "With our strong European network we look forward to connecting Moscow with other European cities."
From a UK traveller's point of view, the introduction of regular flights to Moscow from Manchester presents a potential opportunity to enjoy one of the more unusual city breaks on offer or indeed to start tailor made holidays in some style.
