The 15th-century Inca ruins of Machu Picchu finished first in the Travellers' Choice Attractions awards top 10 World Landmarks 2013 announced by TripAdvisor.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was only discovered just over 100 years ago, is hallowed by spiritually minded visitors on trekking holidays.
The TripAdvisor awards are based on millions of valuable reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor travellers. Angkor Wat in Cambodia came in second place, followed by Taj Mahal in Agra, India.
But back to the winner. One of the world's most easily recognisable cultural sites, experts believe Machu Picchu to be the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its peak.
Machu Picchu is set in the middle of a tropical mountain forest in a breathtakingly beautiful setting.
Its massive walls, terraces and ramps appear as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments, providing a constant source of awe for holidaymakers on group tours.
The natural setting, on the eastern slopes of the haunting Andes, encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its opulent diversity of flora and fauna.
