Peru limbers up for Dakar Series

4th Jun 2013

Motor-loving holidaymakers on specialist tours will have no trouble rallying round events in Peru from October 6-9.

That's because the South American country is hosting this year's Dakar Series.

Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) expects this to contribute to its tourism coffers.

The rally's "Inca Challenge" will take place in the Ica desert, southern Peru.

Reigning Dakar Rally champion Cyril Despres with his Yamaha team has already confirmed his participation in this prestigious Peruvian Government-backed event.

Jose Luis Silva, the Peruvian Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, said the series, as well as being an event in its own right, will provide training for racers to get prepared to the 2014 Dakar edition.

While in Peru for the rally, holidaymakers can also take in a city break to the capital of Lima.

Here, esteemed archaeological locations include the Huaca Pucllana in the Miraflores residential district famed for its huge pyramid.

But Peru's most popular and wondrous of all cultural sites is Machu Picchu, a 15th-century mystical site located 2,430 metres (7,970ft) above sea level in the Cusco region.
