Rio 'top destination for 2013'

2nd Jan 2013

British Airways (BA) has named Rio de Janeiro among its top-three destinations for 2013.

With the Maracana stadium hosting football's World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016, holidaymakers are predicted to choose Rio as one of their main 'must-see' destinations this year.

Many are expected to visit Rio in 2013 as a precursor to returning when the world's two top sporting events are staged there.

Rio de Janeiro, as one of the world's most vibrant cities, also offers famous sun-kissed beaches by day and fun parties at night, making it a natural choice as second-most desirable destination of 2013, according to the BA poll.

British Airways offers flights to Rio from London Heathrow.

The only destination topping Rio is Sri Lanka, according to the survey.

The Asian tropical island has a real buzz about it at the moment, said British Airways' destination manager Ash van Wensveen.

"It's hard to think what Sri Lanka doesn't offer. For a small island it has the lot, from endless beaches to elephant treks and several Unesco world heritage sites."

British Airways launches flights to Colombo in April.

Compiled by a panel of experts and using company data, British Airways' top 13 for 2013 features Seoul in third place, while Vietnam also features.
