Russia's State Hermitage voted world's best museum

4th Jul 2013

One of Russia's most popular cultural sites has been given official recognition of what tourists on St Petersburg city breaks have known for years.

The world-renowned State Hermitage Museum has been named the world's top museum by users of TripAdvisor, a crowd-sourced holiday review site.

The Hermitage, one of the world's oldest museums, was founded by Catherine the Great in 1764 and hosts the planet's biggest collection of paintings.

It has branches in Kazan in central Russia and Vyborg, near the border with Finland, in addition to international sites in Amsterdam, Vilnius and Ferrara.

One reviewer said of the Hermitage: "All the world's beauty in one museum. It lets your mind travel to all the places and eras you always wanted to go."

Mexico City came second with its National Museum of Anthropology, followed by the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois and the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalam.

The Traveller's Choice Attraction awards recognise the top global attractions in landmarks, parks, museums, and amusement and water parks.

The 25 winners were gleaned from millions of reviews and views from travellers worldwide.
