Sri Lanka has been named the best long-haul value-for-money tourist destination for the third consecutive year.
Post Office Travel Money's annual Long Haul Holiday Costs Barometer compared 32 distant destinations to find the value for 12 tourist items, with the items costing £43.85 in Sri Lanka.
Vietnam came in second position with a total cost of £52.37 for the dozen items, while Bali was marginally behind in third at £53.48. The basket of 12 typical tourist items included a three-course meal for two with wine.
Mexico was found to be the cheapest long-haul destination in the Americas, with the same items costing £60.48, while Washington DC (£75.52) fought off competition from five other US locations to be named as the most affordable place in America.
Andrew Brown, Post Office Head of Travel Money, said: "Meal costs are an important consideration on a long-haul holiday as these accounted for over half of the total barometer cost in all barring two of the 32 destinations we surveyed."
