Tourists lavish their Indian rupees on Lavasa

12th Jul 2013

India's futuristic resort of Lavasa provides city breaks with a difference - being one of the planet's newest destinations.

Lavasa, nestling in the quaint Sahyadri hills near Pune in Maharashtra, is a private, planned city which has seen a huge surge in holidaymakers in the first half of 2013.

It welcomed 99,381 tourists last month alone, a 73% rise on June 2012 figures.

This helped to fuel a 29% rise in visitor numbers in the first six months of 2013 compared with the previous year, from 262,805 to 338,258.

So what is all the fuss about?

Despite its 21st century design, Lavasa's appeal rests in traditional pursuits which make it particularly attractive to tourists on trekking holidays.

Nature trails and walks combine with more adventurous activities such as paint-balling, rock climbing and abseiling.

Watersports and train and bus rides to view the city are also highly favoured.

Lavasa's profile has been further raised by becoming the location in the upcoming Bollywood movie Mental starring Salman Khan.
