Day 1

Cairo

Saturday 15th April 2017. Welcome to Egypt! Upon arrival in Cairo you will be transferred to your hotel.
Overnight: Istanbul

Day 2

Pyramids & Saqqara

Cairo - Aswan. Visit to the famous pyramids and huge Sphinx at Giza Plateau. Sole survivors from the ancient Greek-listed Seven Wonders of the World, the pyramids are the planet’s oldest tourist attraction! Gaze in awe at Cheops (Khufu) - the largest of the three great pyramids. Constructed from over 2.5 million limestone blocks it is thought to have taken more than 20 years to construct. Continuing to Saqqara, we can explore the myriad tombs and temples at this site and see Zhoser’s step pyramid - constructed by Imhotep, the pharaoh’s chief architect in 27BC! We later enjoy a chance to freshen up then catch the overnight sleeper train to Aswan.

Day 3

Aswan & Philae Temple

Aswan. Arrive and check into our hotel. This afternoon's highlight is a leisurely boat trip to Agilika Island for Philae Temple for a guided tour of the romantic Philae Temple - dedicated to the goddess Isis. As the sun sets, free time to shop in the colourful souqs and markets or simply relax and watch an amazing sunset in Egypt's southern most town straddling the River Nile.

Days 4-5

Felucca Sailing

Aswan - Nile felucca cruise. Optional early morning drive to Abu Simbel, the famous the rock-cut temple of King Ramses II. This afternoon, we board our Nile felucca for a 2 night cruise upstream toward Kom Ombo. Relax, top up your tan and chat with new friends as the felucca gently plies its route. Stops are made en route at local villages and at the waterside Temple of Kom Ombo. If sailing by felucca is not your style, consider upgrading to a 5 star luxury Nile Cruise with our Nile Cruise Upgrade.

Day 6

Kom Ombo Temple & Luxor

Kom Ombo - Edfu - Luxor. Disembarking in Daraw we drive to Kom Ombo to explore the waterside temple dedicated to the crocodile headed god - Sobek. After we visit the Temple of Horus at Edfu, before driving north to Luxor. Home of the legendary Valley of the Kings and Temple of Karnak, 4000 year-old Luxor is ancient Egypt at it’s best. Enjoy some rest and relaxation. Tonight, an optional visit is available to the Temple of Luxor, spectacularly illuminated at night. We travel to the temple by traditional horse and carriage with restaurant dinner afterwards. The excursion is payable locally. Rest of evening free to enjoy the facilities of our hotel.

Day 7

Valley of the Kings

Luxor - Cairo. Rising early we cross the Nile to arrive at the tomb strewn Valley of the Kings. Highlights of the visit include the Colossi of Memnon, a massive pair of statues that stand silent against the backdrop of history, the Valleys of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens and the awesome ramped and colonnaded Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. The Valley of the Kings is studded with often highly decorated tombs, constructed to once house the regal sarcophagi enclosed mummies of the mighty pharaohs awaiting passage into the after-life. This afternoon after lunch and time to relax we visit the colossal Temple of Karnak. Lose yourself in the stone-columned Hypostle Hall and go crazy with your camera. This is ancient Egypt at its best. Tonight, we return by overnight train to Cairo.

Day 8

Egyptian Museum

Arrival and hotel check-in. Later, we visit the famous Egyptian Museum, famed for the treasures of King Tutankhamen and his famous solid gold funerary mask. This afternoon is free - perhaps spend the remainder of the day exploring Cairo your way.

Day 9

Cairo to Istanbul

Sunday 23rd April 2017. This morning the Egyptian section of your tour comes to an end with included transfer to the airport for your flight to Istanbul. The flight to Istanbul isn't included in the cost of the tour. Turkish Airlines offers open jaw flights between London, Cairo and Istanbul, check the THY website for more details or we can arrange flights on your behalf! If you provide us with your incoming flight details to Turkey we will be there to meet you at Istanbul airport and transfer you to our hotel.

If you are arriving to Istanbul early, you may wish to consider joining our Optional Backstreets Of Istanbul Tour taking place today. The tour commences at 9am. For further details of the excursion, please see our tour Trip Notes. Alternatively, spend the day independently exploring Istanbul – a city that straddles both Europe and Asia!

Day 10

ANZAC Eve - Gallipoli

Istanbul - Gallipoli. This morning we drive to the WW1 battlefields on Gallipoli Peninsular. Early this evening we all relax at our exclusive ANZAC Eve Turkish BBQ before the Australians can head to Lone Pine for the Australian Wreath Laying Ceremony. Once we're in Anzac Cove you are free to visit the memorials and trenches that dot the area before taking our places amongst the many at the Dawn Service site for the atmosphere charged ANZAC Eve vigil.

Day 11

ANZAC Day 2017 - Gallipoli

Gallipoli - Istanbul. First light heralds the Dawn Service, which starts with a poignant bugle call. The service lasts for an hour before we drive to Eceabat – a seaside village approx 20 minutes away for breakfast (payable locally). Later this morning Australian’s have the option to visit Lone Pine Memorial for independent exploration of the cemetery and dignified, quiet reflection. Our New Zealanders are invited to attend the New Zealand service at Chunuk Bair. Please note that there will be no Lone Pine service as in previous years. Later this afternoon, we’ll journey back to Istanbul by coach, arriving in the evening. (Timing on 25 April subject to coach traffic).

Day 12

Istanbul Old City Tour

This morning we spend a couple of hours cruising the Bosphorus before embarking on a guided sightseeing tour of the old city, taking in the stunning Iznik tiled Blue Mosque, Hippodrome area, Topkapi Palace, the 6th century Hagia Sofia (exterior only) and more. This afternoon time is given for you to explore the mammoth Grand Bazaar and exotic Egyptian Spice Market, the latter located opposite from the ferry terminal. From here you can opt to stay and discover the old city by night or return with your guide to our hotel for a little R&R.

Bolt-on Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel, possibly the most awe-inspiring temple of all ancient Egypt, with its gigantic rock–cut façade, was created to revere the mighty ruler Ramses II. Guarding the entrance to the temple, the 4 colossal statues of Ramses II sit majestically staring out across the desert, seemingly since time began. We offer an amazing excursion to visit the Temples of Abu Simbel on the morning of day 4.

Feluccas are simple, traditional Egyptian sailboats that have plied the Nile since ancient times. Feluccas carry between 8 - 12 passengers comfortably. The boat’s deck is draped with soft colourful cushions that serve as your lounging area during the day and as your sleeping area at night. A support boat travels alongside your felucca and is on hand if you need to use the toilet or wash. It is also where your meals are prepared and eaten. You'll need to bring a sleeping bag/sheet and a towel with you. The crew, as well as being experienced sailors, are responsible for the preparation of the included meals.

I have just had the experience of a life time. Anzac Day was incredible. I have been meaning to get to Turkey for Anzac Day for years and I am so glad I finally did. On the go were great and so organised, I am glad I travelled with you after seeing how badly organised some of the other tour companies were. You guys obviously know what you are doing.Oh and big hello to Mehmet our guide. He was so much fun, great sense of humour, great knowledge, great guy. Thanks for the experience all. Great stuff.
