Overnight: Cusco  |  Breakfast

Day 2

The Sacred Valley

The next four days will be spent either trekking in the Andes on our pioneering Wild Andes Trek, on the Classic Inca Trail Trek or, for those not wishing to hike, our Train Package offers further free time to explore Cusco and a guided tour of the Sacred Valley.

The Wild Andes trek takes you away from the crowds that frequent the Inca Trail and is a similar trek in terms of length and difficulty. However you will hike through more pristine and unspoilt scenery and are less likely to spot any other tourists. On the Andean trek you also won't trek to Machu Picchu via the famous Sun Gate, but instead spend the night before in a comfortable hotel leaving you well-rested for exploring this magnificent site. For more information about the treks please refer to the Trip Notes.

Option 1 - Wild Andes Trek
We leave Cusco early to visit the ruined temples of Sacsayhuaman, before heading to the small Quechua-speaking village of Chinchero. We see a traditional weaving demonstration and visit the Quillarumiyoc temple, then begin our trek to Zurite where we enjoy a traditional dinner and stay in a colonial house. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Option 2 - Classic Inca Trail
This morning we enjoy a guided tour of the Sacred Valley, followed by a visit to the market town of Pisac and free time to explore the impressive archaeological site of Ollantaytambo. We spend the night in a comfortable hotel before our trek starts the following morning. (Breakfast & Lunch)

Option 3 - Train Package
Leaving Cusco with those embarking on the Wild Andes Trek, we visit the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, followed by a scenic drive via the town of Pisac to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After lunch we return to Cusco, where we stay in a centrally located hotel for a further three nights. (Breakfast & Lunch)

PLEASE NOTE: You must advise at time of booking if you wish to book the classic Inca Trail Trek (which is subject to availability) or the non trekking Train Package, otherwise you will automatically be put on the Wild Andes Trek.

It's the most challenging section of the Inca Trail today as we ascend for 4 hours through Andean cloud forest to reach the ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’ at an elevation of 4,200 metres. Is This Trip Right For Me?

Overlanding is not a style of travel that will suit everyone so please carefully read the Trip Notes before selecting this tour and be realistic about your ability and desire to join such a trip. If you’re the adventurous type who’d rather spend a night roughing it in a rainforest than luxuriating in a boutique hotel, then overlanding is for you. You just need the right attitude, an open mind, and a desire to participate fully in the trip.

Overland travelling can be demanding and challenging. On your trip you’ll travel in a purpose-built expedition vehicle on an off-the-beaten-track adventure along rugged roads, sometimes across vast distances. You will find the drive times noted on the Trip Notes.

On an overland journey you are more than just a passenger, these are full participation trips and everyone gets involved pitches in! You will also be expected to erect your own tent and help with camp chores including cooking meals for the group on a rota basis. Like all great adventures, the more you put in the more you'll get out!

The type, variety and standard of accommodation can vary greatly from very basic rooms without electricity or running water to comfortable hotels with good facilities. Generally in hotels most rooms will be twin-share, but some may be triple/quad-share. Hostels are nearly always multi-share and may be mixed sex.

The campsites we use range from basic to those with excellent facilities, including swimming pools, restaurants and a bar. On some occasions we wild camp with no facilities, which means there are no toilets - just the vast expanse of the great outdoors and a shovel!

Our overland journeys are designed to offer freedom, and many of our routes have a large degree of flexibility rather than a strict hour-by-hour or even day-by-day itinerary. We intend to follow the planned route but exact night stops and inclusions cannot be guaranteed and it sometimes happens that we decide to make a change to our planned itinerary.

How Challenging Is This Trip? Machu Picchu & Lake Titicaca is great for lovers of culture and history or for those who want a trekking challenge (Inca Trails). There is plenty of insight into local life and stunning drives across remote Andean Scenery. Mainly small comfortable hotels, plenty of opportunities to try the local cuisine. This trip is strenuous in parts and includes a multi-day trek at high altitude, walking for 5-8 hours per day. Some areas that you travel through may be physically challenging; for example you may be at altitude some of the time and you may be camping for several nights. The pace of the trip can be tiring at times and some facilities will be basic. However there will also be plenty of time to relax and some comfortable accommodation.
