Itinerary

Day 1

Yangon

Arrive into Yangon Airport and make your way to our start hotel. A single group airport transfer is offered (please refer to the Trip Notes for details). Meet your guide and the rest of the group at a welcome meeting this afternoon. Early this evening we enjoy a guided tour of the incredible Schwedagon Pagoda.

Day 2

Aye Tharyar

Yangon - Heho - Aye Tharyar. This morning we take a short flight north to Heho, arriving at midday. We then take a short drive to our accommodation at Aye Tharyar, just north of Inle Lake and explore Aye Tharyar Vineyard where there is a fine restaurant.

Day 3

Kakku Stupa Garden

Aye Tharyar - Taunggyi - Khaung Daing Village. Today we visit the old colonial settlement of Taunggyi, which has pretty pagodas and interesting produce and gemstone markets. Later we explore the atmospheric 'stupa garden' at nearby Kakku. Sacred to the Pa-O people (whose villages surround the site) there are almost 2500 stupas from different eras and with differing architectural styles. Later, we drive to the west side of Inle lake to Khaung Daing Village, our lakeside hotel.

Day 4

Inle Lake

Today we explore Inle Lake by boat which is inhabited by the Intha people who are famous for their distinctive foot-rowing technique. We'll visit many of the craftsmen with workshops in the stilt-house villages on the lake and see traditional methods of weaving, boat-making and a silversmiths workshop. We will also visit Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, the holiest site in Shan state. Tonight we spend a second night at our lakeside hotel.

Day 5

Pindaya

Khaung Daing Village - Pindaya. This morning we drive up to the picturesque hill-station town of Pindaya which is home to the smiling Danu and Pa-O people in their black tunics and bright headscarves. Here we'll visit the Shew Oo Min Cave with its thousands of gilded Buddhas, see local artisans at work and soak up the spectacular views of the countryside below.

Day 6

Shan Plateau trek

Pindaya - Ya Sa Kyi. This morning we begin our four day trek, making an easy ascent through hilly and forested country to the Danu village of Ya Sa Kyi, where we stop for lunch. This afternoon we pass mountain-side fields of wheat and rice en route to Taung Myint Gyi, home to the Palaung people. Here we''ll meet the locals and the resident monks, and bed down for the night in sleeping bags in the great hall of the monastery. This is a great opportunity to meet the local people and the resident monks.

Day 7

Trek to Mway Taw Monastery

Ya Sa Kyi - Mway Taw Monastery. Today we hike across open farmland to the village of Kaung Soe Gone where we stop for lunch. We'll see colourfully decorated bullock-carts, water-buffalo and tribal people working in the fields and pass several villages en route to our overnight accommodation at Mway Taw Monastery.

Day 8

Trek to Myauk Ywar Taung

Mway Taw Monastery - Myauk Ywar Taung Monastery. On our scenic trek today you'll notice that the landscape changes again and is now drier with fewer trees and more open valleys. We pass through several villages, such as Oomin, where we have lunch at a monastery and visit a cave shrine with many statues of Buddha. In the late afternoon we arrive at the monastery of Myauk Ywar Taung where we spend the night.

Day 9

Fly to Mandalay

Myauk Ywar Taung Monastery - Mandalay. This morning is the final leg of our trek. After breakfast at the monastery, we walk downhill towards a nearby village and then trek across farmland and between rice paddies to meet our vehicle and drive to the airport at Heho. A short flight takes us to Mandalay, where we check in at our hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 10

Mingun & U Bein

Today, we take a boat trip across the Irrawaddy River to Mingun. Here, we can visit the unfinished temple of King Bodawpaya and stand beside its gigantic 90 tonne brass bell. Returning to Mandalay, we visit some craft workshops including a gold leaf makers, woodcarvers and bronze casting workshop. Our final stop of the day is Amarapurna where we take a sunset stroll across the famous 1200 metre-long teak U Bein Bridge.

Day 11

Boat to Bagan

Mandalay - Bagan. After an early start, we head down to the riverfront to catch the express ferry that will take us down the Irrawaddy to Bagan. Sit back, relax and watch rural Burmese life pass by at a leisurely pace as the boat ride takes most of the day. On arrival, there may be time to enjoy a first sunset view of the temples before continuing to our hotel.

Day 12

Bagan

Nothing can quite prepare you for the spectacular sight of stupa-upon-stupa that fills the dusty plains of Bagan. Over 2,000 temples and pagodas dating back some 800 years creates one of the world’s most impressive skylines. Today we have the full day to explore some of the innumerable temples and pagodas at Bagan. With time to stroll amongst the stallholders at the riverside market at Nyaung U and to visit the gilded Shwezigon Pagoda, dating from the 11th Century, the exquisite murals of Ku Byauk Gyi and the Ananda Temple. We will find the best sunset viewpoint, before dining out at a local restaurant and enjoying a traditional Burmese marionette show.

Day 13

Bagan to Yangon

Bagan - Yangon. We spend another day in Bagan exploring more of its magnificent monuments and a traditional lacquer-ware workshop before transferring to Bagan Airport to catch the 1-hour flight back to Yangon.

Day 14

Yangon

Our Myanmar adventure comes to an end today. We have the morning free for final sightseeing and souvenir buying, before an early afternoon transfer to Yangon Airport, alternatively you can make your own way to the airport at a suitable time.

Is This Holiday For You?

This is primarily a touring and sightseeing holiday at low elevation, that includes a continuous 4-day trek through the forest, farmland and hill-tribe villages to the north-west of Inle Lake. The first 3 days of this trek each involve approximately 6 hours walking and the last day has just 2 to 3 hours. In addition, whilst at some of the sites, such as Kakku and Bagan, there is the opportunity to do some exploration on foot.
