Stephanie was an excellent guide. Organised, experienced, patient and with a great sense of hunour. I learned a lot about China from her and really enjoyed the experience. I wouldn't hesitate in nominating her for a tour leader award.

I'd also like to commend Shannon, our guide in Chengdu. She was brilliant too. Very flexible, knowledgable and enthusiastic.

Both girls deserve special recognition (they knocked the socks off the boys!)”

Feng was an amazing guide. She was very helpful & informative. Some of our tour group came down with gastro & Feng took great care of us.

Part of our group went on & did Chinese Checkers but those who were left continued our tour with Tom who was also great & just as informative.

The local guides were very knowledgeable & very entertaining so the tour was never boring.

The tour itself I would definitely recommend to my clients as I believe the tour covered all the major sights and offered great optional tours. ”

Christine D'Agostino • Submitted 19 Sep 2016

This was a great tour of China. The great wall and warriors are a great experience on this tour and we even got our own time to explore them. Our tour guide was Lisa and she did a fantastic job throughout the tour especially in Beijing by herself. ”

Recommended places to visit in China

With such a varied geography, illustrious history and fascinating collection of cultures China offers travellers an astonishing choice of travel destinations. To help you decide where to visit here's some of our favourite spots in China including thriving cities and man-made wonders.

Xi'an - city walls and clay armies

View on map
Terracotta Warriors | Xi'an | China

City Walls are very common in China and the one in Xi’an is particularly special as you have the opportunity to cycle, run, walk, ride around the whole thing with impressive views of the city below. A short distance from the city you'll also find one of China's most famous sites - the Terracotta Warriors. Incredibly these 8,000 or so soldiers are all unique with no one face being the same as any other.

Shanghai - city of contrasts

View on map
Shanghai by night | China

Perched on China’s east coast, Shanghai is home to lots of futuristic skyscrapers, the historic and decadent Bund area as well as over 100 public parks. For the best views of the city head up the Oriental Pearl tower or take a relaxing cruise along the Huangpu River. Shopaholics can get their fix on Nanjing Road and nothing tastes like Shanghai than a bellyful of traditional dumplings.

Beijing - the captivating capital

View on map
The Gate of Heavenly Peace | Beijing | China

Formerly Peking, Beijing is without doubt the epicentre of China’s politics, economy and culture. From historical Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City to the traditional Hutongs and modern Olympic Park, Beijing is definitely a place that deserves plenty of attention. It's also the best place to try delicious Peking Duck and makes a great base for visiting the Great Wall of China.

The Great Wall - UNESCO-listed defence

View on map
The Great Wall of China | China

Snaking some 5,500 miles (8,800km) across the country – no trip to China is complete without a visit to this world famous UNESCO World Heritage site. Hike along impressive parts of the Great Wall that are still intact or just stop and admire the magnificent views all around. Our group tours visit famous Badaling and spend a night at the Juyongguan Pass for something a little special.

Chengdu - panda country

View on map
Gaint pandas | China

Home to the nation’s favourite mascot, the giant panda, Chengdu is one of the best places to see these beautiful bears at the Giant Panda Breeding Centre. The city is the capital of the Sichuan Province, which means lots of delicious, spicy food. You can also enjoy a leisurely stroll around Jinli Street at night or visit the impressive Giant Buddha of Le Shan just a couple of hours outside the city.

Longsheng & Dragon's Backbone - rural China

View on map
The Dragon's Backbone | Longsheng | China

Famed for its impressive rice terraces, Longsheng is a wonderful respite from the hustle and bustle of many of China’s main cities. One of the most famous being Longji (Dragon’s Backbone) which when full of water (usually in Spring) resembles that of the scaly back of a dragon. It’s the perfect place to to appreciate Chinese countryside and get a real glimpse into local rural life.
