Inspirations for a holiday in Costa Rica
Planning a tailor made holiday to Costa Rica and want to include some unique experiences in your itinerary? Read through a few of our suggestions below to help get you started.
Why just look at a waterfall when you can climb through it? Waterfall rappelling is the perfect way to get the adrenaline pumping whilst also cooling off from the fierce Costa Rican heat. Similar to abseiling, the only difference is the addition of water cascading on to you as you make your descent. With so many waterfalls across the country, this experience allows you to completely immerse yourself in their beauty in a unique and thrilling way. The most Popular destinations for this activity include Arenal, Manuel Antonio and Rincón de la Vieja.
Costa Rica is more than just rainforests and toucans. Its coastline offers some fantastic surfing opportunities for everyone, from small ripples for beginners to crashing waves for pros. Areas like Dominical, Tamarindo and Jaco have some of the best beaches for surfing and are jam packed full of all-inclusive surf schools as well as independent surfers who offer lessons in exchange for beer money.
Thanks to its volcanic landscape, Costa Rica is speckled with hot springs and bubbling mud pools. These naturally heated pockets of water and mud contain numerous minerals, which are alleged to have curative properties. One of the best places to go for this experience is Rincon de la Vieja, where you can paint volcanic mud onto your body, leave it to harden and then jump into one of the springs to wash it off. Your skin should feel baby smooth by the end.
Can’t function in the morning until you’ve had a steaming mug of aromatic coffee? Then you won’t want to leave Costa Rica without sampling a brew from the country’s first gourmet coffee roaster, Cafe Britt. Just a short drive from San Jose, this coffee plantation makes for the perfect day trip where you can learn about the coffee-making process, visit a working coffee farm and sample the final product.
While there are plenty of animals to ogle at inland, some of the most magnificent creatures can be found just off the coast. Costa Rica’s Pacific coast sees hundreds of whales and dolphins who have come in search of warmer waters. The king of these marine wonders is, without a doubt, the humpback whale, which can be seen consistently from mid-July until March – one of the longest humpback seasons in the world.
Considered a gift of the gods by ancient Mesoamerican cultures, chocolate might not be used as currency any more but it certainly hasn’t lost its lofty status and universal adoration. If you have a sweet tooth or are simply curious to know where chocolate comes from, a chocolate tour is a must. During the session you will learn all about the production process, from bean to bar and, of course, there will be plenty of sampling to consolidate your learning.
