Itinerary

Day 1

San Jose

Welcome to Costa Rica! Upon arrival at San Jose Airport you'll be met by a representative and transferred to our hotel. Spend the remains of the day at leisure in Costa Rica's cosmopolitan capital city, which is nestled in a fertile valley among coffee and sugar-cane farms.
Overnight: San Jose

Days 2-3

Manuel Antonio

San José - Manuel Antonio. We travel from the Central Valley to the Pacific coast, through very lush green countryside to Manuel Antonio, where we will visit the Manuel Antonio National Park, one of the most popular parks in the country. This celebrated park is blessed with beautiful lagoons, palm fringed beaches, a vast array of animals and lush green forests. Some of the many creatures that call Manuel Antonio home include sloths, pelicans, white-faced monkeys, anteaters and huge iguanas. It is also famous for its beaches - although almost deserted on weekdays, keep a sharp eye on your belongings, as the monkeys and raccoons are seasoned thieves!
Overnight: Manuel Antonio Village  |  Breakfast x 1

Days 4-5

Monteverde Cloud Forest

Manuel Antonio - Santa Elena. We travel to the old town of Quepos, once a very important port for the exportation of bananas. We then ascend a steep mountain road that offers great views over lush green hills that flatten to meet the Pacific ocean. We then continue our journey to the small town of Santa Elena, which is our base for exploring the beautiful Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve with its unique canopy of cloud. The reserve is a nature lovers paradise and an excellent place for bird watching, we go in search of the endangered Quetzal, a bird with incredibly beautiful and unique plumage and visit the Hummingbird Gallery where these energetic birds buzz around sipping on nectar.

There are lots of optional activities on offer in and around Santa Elena to keep us entertained, from its famous ziplines over the cloud forest and sky walks on suspension bridges above the forest canopy, to horse treks and nature-spotting twilight walks.
Overnight: Santa Elena  |  Breakfast x 1

Days 6-7

La Fortuna

Santa Elena - La Fortuna. Our next journey takes us through the mountains of the cloud forest and across picturesque Lake Arenal by boat, en route to the sleepy rural town of La Fortuna which is located in the shadow of the active Arenal Volcano. In the evening there is an exciting optional excursion to a site near the volcano to listen to its rumbles and see the red hot lava. There's plenty of free time in La Fortuna to partake in a variety of exciting optional excursions; from caving or white water rafting, to canoeing, horse-riding or trekking in search of the local wildlife and beautiful waterfalls.
Overnight: La Fortuna  |  Breakfast x 1

Day 8

San Jose

La Fortuna - San Jose. Today we travel back to San Jose for our final night in the capital.

Becky was excellent throughout, giving support and advice where needed but also giving us space to enjoy ourselves. The main towns that we visited were also great.

I really enjoyed the 9 day 'Wild Costa Rica' tour i did that started on 22nd Feb. I played it safe by arriving in San Jose on the 20th to give me enough time to settle and look around San Jose before the trip officially started. When i was in the hotel lobby early on the 22nd the guide Cesar saw me and asked me if i was one of the party and he introduced himself when i said yes. I found the printout that was up in the lobby about the start of the tour useful too.

I found the tour was well organised and timsecales for meeting up on certain mornings for travel and optional guide reasonable and liked the flexibility of tour to spend time doing things you wanted if you didn't opt for any optional tours. I especially liked the way Cesar organised meals out in advance so we just walked in to various eateries and had a table of up to 14 already reserved.

I can't of any major criticisms of the tour apart from the accommodation we stayed in for 2 nights in La Fortuna called Cabinas Oriuma was a little poor with a lot of noise from nearby streets a little too audible throughout the night and when it rained heavily it sounded like the roof was paper thin and i and others commented we didn't get the best nights sleep.

Overall i had a really good time though and thank all involved for organising it.

Regards

Matthew Sinclair

Tour: Was fine, except for final hotel in La Fortuna, which was too basic, very noisy and worst of all, required a US$10 per night charge for air conditioning, and US$5 for the use of the safe. None of the other hotels had this charge and it left a very nasty taste.

Guide: Cesar was quite competent, but slightly "behind the game". I am aware that the description of the tour made it quite clear that clients would have to carry their own luggage. In practice, this was, on one occasion, very hard (uphill for I/2 km in boiling heat) and it would have been very easy to have suggested a taxi. Cesar also relied on the young men in the party to load and unload the baggage into/from the mini-buses; this was very nice for us, but I'm not sure what the young men felt, as Cesar didn't help at all.
