Saturday. Welcome to the land of the pharaohs! Arrive Cairo, included transfer to hotel and overnight.
Overnight: Cairo

    Cairo
Day 2

Pyramids and camels

Today, we visit the legendary pyramids and iconic Sphinx at Giza Plateau. Sole survivors from the ancient Greek-listed Seven Wonders of the World. Gaze in awe at the largest of the three great pyramids - Cheops, constructed from over 2.5 million limestone blocks it took more than 20 years to construct. We explore this area on foot and then on the back of a camel! Off we ride into the sands, our sturdy ships of the desert beneath us!
Overnight: Cairo  |  Breakfast

Day 3

The Egyptian Museum

Cairo - Aswan. Today, we venture in search of the treasures of King Tutankhamen, mummies and more at the Egyptian Museum. Later we tour the Islamic Citadel of Saladin with views looking down over the old city, watching people go about their daily life. We conclude the day with a market walk through the bustling Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Time to freshen up, this evening we take the comfortable overnight sleeper train to Aswan.
Overnight: Sleeper Train  |  Breakfast, Dinner

Day 4

Local markets

This morning we arrive into Aswan and explore the Nubian city on a guided walk of the local market and souq. Scenically located on the Nile, a walk along the riverside corniche to view the many boats is a real treat, as is Aswan bazaar. Free afternoon.
Overnight: Aswan  |  Breakfast

Day 5

Free time

A free day or opt for the morning air excursion to Abu Simbel. The remainder of the afternoon at leisure; maybe relax by the pool, take a stroll along the Nile corniche or explore the lively market place.
Overnight: Aswan  |  Breakfast

Day 6

Boating on the Nile

Aswan - Luxor. This morning we board a motor boat and cruise in and around the islands located on the Nile, before stopping at Sahal island where we visit a local village and school (if open); sometimes there is even a local football game in action. Lunch will be served in the home of an Egyptian family followed by the train north to Luxor, one of the world’s greatest open-air museums. The 4000 year old site of ancient Thebes, known today as Luxor, is our base for the next three days.
Overnight: Luxor  |  Breakfast, Lunch

Day 7

Karnak & Luxor Temple

At sunrise today we have the option to go hot air ballooning before we visit Karnak Temple. More than a temple, Karnak is a spectacular complex of sanctuaries, pylons, statuettes and obelisks. Built on a grand scale, Karnak is probably Egypt’s finest ancient temple. This afternoon is free to wander along Luxor’s historic waterfront. This evening, we travel in horse-drawn carriages to the illuminated Temple of Luxor where we enjoy a tour in the cool evening air.
Overnight: Luxor  |  Breakfast

Day 8

Valley of the Kings

Luxor - Cairo. Today, we visit Luxor’s legendary West Bank - home to the famous Valleys of the Kings, the imposing colonnaded temple of Queen Hatshepsut and the gigantic Colossi of Memnon. See how the ancient Egyptians confounded tomb robbers with the construction of elaborate catacombs, once filled with treasures and highly decorated to allow the pharaoh passage to the afterlife. Tonight, we return to Cairo by sleeper train.
Overnight: Sleeper Train  |  Breakfast, Dinner

Day 9

Cairo

Arriving into Cairo this morning, the rest of the day is free to explore Africa’s largest city. Spend the day around the pool, or perhaps head out, explore and take the family for a nice lunch at one of the city’s many hotels.

The tour was great. It was busy, but there wasn't anything that we would have wanted to miss out! The hotels were all of good quality, comfortable and in good locations.

Helal was a great guide and was not only knowledge and generous with his time, but tirelessly patient with the children. He took us to some really interesting local restaurants and really helped with tired children. His pitch for explaining the complexity of the ancient relationships and timelines was perfect, enough information for adults and quirky stories for the children.

We were also happy to have the change to flights as I think it probably worked for us better than the overnight trains would have.

I would highly recommend the tour and especially Helal to anyone thinking about visiting Egypt.

Dear team,

We spent 10 weeks travelling around the world, including a visit to Egypt on your 10 Day Family Adventure in September. The children both agree that your tour was the highlight of the entire journey and I have to say I agree with them! We were made so welcome by your staff and the people we encountered. We absolutely loved the quirky opportunities such as camel riding behind the Great Pyramid, hot air ballooning over Luxor and haggling in the local bazaars. The hotels were excellent - clean and refreshing and our tour guide, Helal, was like a favourite uncle to the kids on the tour. He was the perfect tour guide - organized, relaxed and friendly. Apart from keeping the kids entertained, he made it so easy for the adults to enjoy the sights too. This tour was so well thought out and combined so many amazing elements. I just hope many more people take the opportunity to visit this amazing country and do so with one of your tours. We certainly intend to travel with On the Go again! Thank-you so much.

Dear On The Go Tours,

My family and I have just completed a 10 day tour of Egypt with your company, and I want to tell you we've been thrilled with your service. Your Classic Family Adventure was ideal for us and our children aged 10 and 9.

Before we came we were a little worried about our security in Egypt, particularly since the first democratic election results were announced while we were here, but you've helped us feel completely at ease during our time in Egypt. Your company was very well organised - our transport and accommodation was well managed throughout the tour. Your tour guides gave us excellent advice for staying in Egypt e.g. what we needed to bring with us and how to respond to people wanting to sell us souvenirs.

Seeing the ancient Egyptian pyramids, tombs and temples first hand was absolutely amazing - pictures and words cannot properly describe their sheer awesome scale. Our personal guide Mr. Helal was a true expert w ho was able to clearly explain the meaning of what we were seeing and answer our questions.

I recommend visiting Egypt with 'On The Go' without reserve.

My 12 year old son and I recently returned from the adventure of a lifetime. Egypt is amazing.

From the moment we arrived at Cairo airport and were met by the On The Go representative, and for the remaining 10 days of our tour, everything was organised beautifully. This was a family tour and our group consisted of more kids than adults – a great group of Aussies, English and South Africans.

Our fabulous guide for the tour was Alam whose obvious knowledge and passion for Egyptian culture and history rubbed off on us all.

Alam managed to keep both adults and kids entertained with enough information to satisfy the adults but not too much to overwhelm the kids. He was always happy to answer any questions and give more background if we wanted it.

Too many wonderful sights to mention but the highlights for me were definitely the Valley of the Kings (those tombs are amazing – the colour in them was overwhelming); and the two add-ons of Abu Simbel and the hot air balloon trip over Luxor. If you can afford it make sure you do these two extras. And of course what 12 year boy is not going to be excited about seeing Tutankhamun’s mummy!

We felt cared for and safe. Egypt is a marvellous place to visit and it is a safe place to travel. The locals need the tourists back and I hope tourists won’t be put off by recent events in this remarkable country.

Thank you Alam and On The Go for a most memorable holiday.

The small group was wonderful, Sam really made the tour work, he was so brilliant. | had the time of my life!

Evan Predavec • Submitted 28 Jan 2011

The family tour has meant that the pace was not too hectic, although even then the kids have been wilting a bit under the onslaught of sights, sounds and general excitement combined with too little sleep. A great guide has made an enormous difference there. Haytham (Sam) is very knowledgeable, very patient and sensible enough to adjust the itinerary if it will make things easier. Having one single guide also means that he’s been able to reinforce the stories and information he’s given us and that made each site we visited more meaningful.

The most significant thing, though has been the kids being able to play with, and just be with, other kids. For the last week our two boys have been part of a little group of kids doing their own thing. They cluster down the back of the mini-bus, they scream around the pool, last night they sat at their own table in the restaurant.

We’d highly recommend the On the Go Classic Egypt family tour to anyone who wants to see Egypt with their kids. With 20-20 hindsight we’d add in the few days at the Red Sea at the end to relax after ten days of fairly constant motion, but that’s a choice not a criticism of the tour.

Mark,

Just wanted to drop you a quick e-mail to tell you how much we enjoyed our Classic Family Adventure in Egypt. We had a fabulous holiday and have some truly wonderful memories (not to mention hundreds of photographs). Our guide, Super Mo, was really excellent and contributed greatly to our enjoyment.

Thanks again for all your help with the booking - Abu Simbel and the Hot Air Ballooning were really great and we were glad we had booked them in advance.

Thanks again
