Exploring Alexandria

Bright and early this morning we drive to the port side city of Alexandria on the Mediterranean Coast. Arriving at the windswept city known for its broad beaches and seafront corniche dotted with sun loungers, amusements and cafes we embark on a guided tour of the Roman catacombs. Heading underground we view the largest known Roman burial site in Egypt, complete with burial chambers, labyrinth alleyways and entertaining rooms for families coming to visit the dead. We then visit Pompey's Pillar, a modest 25m tower, which is all that remains of an ancient column, from the ruined Temple of Serapis.

We stop at the impressive, Library of Alexandria (and those who are interested can go inside) before following the seafront to Fort Quaitbey. Here, as we walk the promenade we'll see the citadel built during the 1480s, perhaps most famous for being the site of the great Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World.

After hotel check in and time to freshen up we'll drive along the corniche stopping at a well known seafood restaurant for dinner.
Overnight: Alexandria  |  Breakfast, Dinner

Day 3

El Alamein

Today we visit the Commonwealth War Graves of El Alamein. It is here where two extended battles were fought during World War II. The first began on the 1st July 1942 and lasted for 27 days, it ended as a stalemate. After 3 months of holding back the enemy, the Allies launched a second attack which lasted for 13 days. This saw the Allied forces (including British, Australian and New Zealand soldiers) push back the Axis powers for ultimate defeat in Tunisia. Some 13,000 Allied soldiers were killed and 70,000 were wounded in the battle.

Later, we tour the compact El Alamein military museum that acts as a memorial for the battle and houses lots of original war vehicles, weapons, uniforms and records. Displays in the museum detail the complete history of World War II in North Africa from all sides and stands on the site where the actual battle took place. This afternoon we return to Cairo.

It was a truly wonderful tour I loved everything about it

It was great to be met at the airport and helped though as it was as I left this helped so much so I say thank you once again to those people. I think it was Abdul and George

Our Main guide Dino couldn't have been more helpful or friendly, nothing was too much trouble for him and he was so knowledgeable. It can't be easy to keep so many people happy at the same time.

Our other guide on the cruise ship, Aaram (sorry I think I have the wrong spelling there)

was very good too and so funny. The cruise ship itself was fantastic and the staff were tripping over themselves to attend us. The food and accommodation was top class.

Abdul was on his "L" plates but I'm sure, in time, will do very well on his own

While I say all we saw, the temples ( just kept getting bigger and bigger) the towns, all that was Egypton was great and guides couldn't have been better.

I think I also need to say

That the Abu Simbel part of the tour should be included in the price and not an add on, as nobody would go to Egypt and not want to go to Abu Simbel

Also the Oasis Hotel was the worst of a great bunch, the location, with no shop nearby and the feeling you had nowhere to go but stay in your hotel room

To one staff member I seemed too much of a inconvenience when I had to send my chicken back as it was uncooked. My plate was taken away with no words then brought back 10 minutes late, plate just dropped down in front of me again no words while he shuffled off.

The chicken had been thrown in the deep fryer and was now dead. Hence it was left on the plate. This is the same staff member that took half and hour to actually acknowledge that we wanted to order the first night we were there

These are only little things and it did not take away the fact that I had a fantastic holiday due to the fellow travellers, wonderful guides and "On the go Tours"

THANK YOU I WILL RETURN

What a fabulous adventure I had, even though I had an injured leg. I loved it all except a few things, like the overnight train, we can only hope Egypt will get a nice new or near new train for this journey.

As for our guide, Amon Zuzu well he was far more than a guide, he cared for my medical needs for my injured leg, as well as everything else that any of us required. but best of all was sharing his passion for Egypt and all its wonders. He had a great sense of fun and always kept us entertained.

I can only rate the company, tour & the tour guide as EXCELLENT +++++++++++

This tour was incredible! I'd been dreaming of going to Egypt since I was a little girl and yet this trip still managed to go beyond my expectations. Despite the negative imagery in the media I felt completely safe. The people were all so kind and welcoming!

The scheduling of the trip was well done, giving us down time to relax while also filling the days with great sites and activities. I was looking forward to seeing the pyramids and Abu Simbel, but I was surprised to find that the felucca was actually my favourite part of the tour! The food was consistently delicious (and I'm usually a picky eater), while the crew men were a lot of fun and made us feel very comfortable. We even ended up belly dancing under the stars with Nubian music while they played the drums! As we docked for the second night, all of us were hoping we could have an extra day on the Nile.

Our guide Alam was brilliant. He was very humorous, while also very professional and knowledgable. I was impressed that he always knew the answer to any question we asked. Alam did an excellent job explaining things clearly and making us feel welcome. He was quite considerate and sincerely checked up on each of us to make sure we were doing well and having a great time. He became a friend to us (literally, since we all added him and each other on facebook afterwards!).

I am already hoping to come back to Egypt in a few years, especially with the new museums that will be opening. From the great size and majesty of the pyramids, to the intricate details of the hieroglyphs in the Valley of the Kings, to the mighty statues for Ramses II and the beautiful intricacies of the mosques. I've been telling everyone within earshot that Egypt is safe, welcoming, beautiful, and unforgettable.

Thank You, On The Go!

To Whom It May Concern,

I have recently come back from one of your tours (El Alamein & Ancient Egypt) and felt that I had to write to say what a wonderful experience it was.

Not only was the tour itself well selected, visiting many of the historical and cultural highlights that gives Egypt its well deserved reputation as a must on any travel list, but the logistics and organisation were extremely well handled: from the first booking, to arriving at Cairo, all the way through the tour to the flight home again, everything was well handled and I could just relax and enjoy the holiday. Even the group itself were wonderful; everyone getting on well together to create a wonderful atmosphere and made the whole holiday an unforgettable experience.

Most importantly the guide, Haytham Youssry, was absolutely brilliant. He was able to use his experience and knowledge of Egypt to pass on interesting facts, making them come alive as well as finding that often difficult balance between the informative and the entertaining - the whole group were hooked on his every word (from the reign of Ramses II to the myths and legends of Ancient Egypt to the recommendations for a restaurant for that night's dinner). In the hotel in Aswan, I had problems with a room key and he was able to sort it out quickly and efficiently with the reception so that it was soon resolved. He looked after the whole group (and showed infinite patience with one member of the group who was difficult at times), making sure that we were okay the whole time and that we were enjoying ourselves and almost felt like a friend on our travels. (Whilst I'm sure that you have a number of similarly excellent guides, I genuinely don't think that the tour would have been quite the same with anybody else!)

In short, thank you once again for a wonderful holiday (dare I say one of the best holidays I have been on). I shall certainly recommend to my friends and family to try a tour with you, and hope to go on another of your tours in the future.
