For a holiday in Egypt that's out of the ordinary, consider one of our unique tours that combine the highlights of ancient Egypt with a special dawn visit to Abu Simbel to witness a true spectacle. Our Sun Festival trips coincide with the birthday (21 October) and coronation day (21 February) of King Ramses II when the temple's inner sanctum is illuminated by the sun's ray. With incredible architectural precision, Ramses II had his entire temple carefully angled and oriented for this precise event. read more

The architectural brilliance of the ancient Egyptians: The original Abu Simbel temple was built in the 13th century BC by King Ramses II. With four separate statues depicting Ramses at various stages of his adult life at the temple's entrance, it’s an impressive monument before one even enters. Carved out of the mountainside, the temple’s inner sanctum also has four statues; three of which - Amun-Re, Re-Herakhte and Ramses the god - are illuminated by the sun’s rays twice a year on the sun festival, whilst the statute of Ptah (the god of darkness) remains in the shadows. But the wonders don’t stop there. In the late 1960s, the shoreline of Lake Nasser was in danger of eroding the temple foundations and damaging it permanently. Engineers relocated the temple further up the bank, which means it now aligns with the sun a day later than it did in Ramses' day.

Egypt tour reviews

Scoring an average traveller rating of 4.81 out of 5 based on 128 recent reviews — See All Egypt Reviews

Egypt was on top of our bucket list, prior to booking we were a bit hesitant due to safety concerns from family and friends, but any hesitation we had disappeared once we contacted OTGT, every person we interacted throughout the process have been nothing but professional making our trip a wonderful experience. From Charlie Bridger who assisted us with the booking to Abdulah, the Representative/Coordinator in Cairo who was very helpful until we met with our tour guide, Alam Mido.

Alam is a great asset to OTGT, Alam is passionate about his job, he without doubt was a key contributing factor to making our trip to Egypt exceptional and beyond our expectation. Alam not only delivered what is expected from him as a tour guide, but he did so with a caring and friendly attitude. Pyramids, Temples, cruising on the Nile and enjoying the Red Sea could not have been better than with OTGT. Thank you Alam, you are an extraordinary tour guide. "Shookram"

We highly recommend Egypt.

Absolutely amazing tour led by efficient, knowledgeable and approachable guide Dino. Nothing was a problem to him, group adored him.

Need more time at the museum of Cairo - this was rushed and stressful and such value in this exhibition

In hurghada would be better to snorkel the reef than the island on day tour

Oasis hotel (first nights) were not at all friendly or accommodating but this improved as the tour went on

Cruise on the Alyssa was incredible

Other than this minimal constructive feedback the tour was faultless and I say thankyou again to Dino and Ahmed for ensuring our safety and genuine enjoyment of your country ”

This tour of Egypt exceeded my high expectations. I love the travel style of On the Go.

Before we went to Egypt, people expressed concern about our safety and we felt completely safe and cared for the whole trip. From the greeting when we arrived in Cairo and had someone to assist us through the arrival process to the guide taking us as far as security would let him go on our departure, the service was exceptional.

It's tough to capture the feeling of exploring a civilization that has a history spanning back thousands of years . . . walking down into one of the pyramids (the only remaining of the original 7 Wonders of the World), standing at the base of one of the massive King Ramesses II carvings at Abu Simbel, exploring ancient temples and tombs. For me the thing that always touches my heart most about travel is the people I meet and the ones I share the journey with. Floating down the Nile on a felucca, swimming in the red sea and hanging out in coffee shops with the locals in the evenings were experiences I will never forget. I believe that the small group size and great itineraries with On the Go attracts people who are truly passionate about travel, both as clients and as guides. Our guide Momo was fabulous! His knowledge and passion were evident in everything he did for us. Everything was taken care of for us at all of our stops and we were always provided with great information and given adequate time to explore on our own. We truly could not have asked for more (and if we would have, I'm sure he'd have found a way to make it happen).

For people who are interested in exploring Egypt in an authentic way that still provides comfort at the end of the day, I would strongly recommend On the Go.”

Recommended places to visit in Egypt

With so many ancient wonders to choose from putting together a wish-list of Egypt's sites can be slightly overwhelming so to help we've put together a selection of the best with a bit of beach and river cruising thrown in for a little variety.

Cairo - Pyramids and Treasures

View on map
The Pyramids | Giza | Egypt

The capital of Cairo is a fascinating introduction to modern Egypt with plenty of world-class sights. The Pyramids of Giza need little introduction as the oldest and last standing Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. If you want to see some of the priceless treasures once enclosed in pharaoh's tombs, then the Egyptian Museum in Cairo is the place to go with mummies too.

Hurghada - Red Sea Relaxation

View on map
By the beach in Hurghada | Egypt

What better way to top off your time in Egypt than by the sea, soaking up the sun on a sandy beach. Once a small fishing town, the now popular Red Sea resort of Hurghada is the perfect place to while away the days with excellent snorkeling opportunities around the colourful coral reefs just offshore. It's also a great place to try windsurfing and kiteboarding with reliable winds year-round.

Abu Simbel - Iconic Temples

View on map
Abu Simbel in Egypt is a real highlight of our Middle East tours

Arguably one of the most impressive ancient sites in Egypt, the two rock temples of Abu Simbel were constructed in dedicated to King Ramses II and are an incredible sight to behold. Marvel at the four colossal statues guarding the entrance of the Great Temple and wander inside its central hall, small chambers and sanctuary, all decorated with hieroglyphics and deity depictions.

Aswan - Nubian City

View on map

Situated on the banks of the River Nile, the Nubian city of Aswan enjoys a scenic setting across from the granite-clad Elephantine Island in the south of Egypt. Here you can stroll along the broad Corniche, shop to your heart's content in the bustling souks, dine in floating restaurants, visit the impressive High Dam and explore the ancient Philae Temple on Agilika Island.

Luxor - The Valley of the Kings

View on map
Queen Hatshepsut Temple | Luxor | Egypt

A vast necropolis where elaborate royal tombs mark the burial ground of pharaohs from the New Kingdom, you won’t want to miss the Valley of the Kings on your trip to Egypt and Luxor. Wander down into these underground tombs, once decorated with priceless treasures that the pharaoh would have required in the afterlife, and colourful hieroglyphics on the tomb walls.

Nile Cruising - Historic Waterway

View on map
Traditional felucca boat | Egypt

With the sun on your face and wind in your hair cruising down the Nile in a traditional felucca sail boat surely is a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city and dusty temple complexes. Spend two nights plying the course of the Nile, top up on your tan, dance around beachside bonfires and fall asleep under a blanket of stars or opt for a luxury cruise with all mod-cons.

Egypt Travel Advice:

We keep abreast of the latest travel advice to Egypt and follow advice as set out by the British Foreign Office. Please be assured that safety of our travellers is paramount and our tours will only visit places that the Foreign Office advises are safe to travel to. We recommend that your check the latest travel advice from the relevant advisory body in your country.

With recent events in the Middle East Region, travel advice to Egypt does change from time to time. At this point in time, we are using the sleeper train service between Cairo and/or Luxor and Aswan, as the Interior Ministry in Egypt disallows foreign nationals to travel on the seated service. We are also not running tours to the Siwa Oasis and will re-evaluate this again as soon as the FCO lifts the current travel ban to Egypt's Western Desert.

The FCO currently advises against all but essential travel by air to or from Sharm el Sheikh airport. None of our group tours include Sharm el Sheikh and so our group tours remain unaffected by this travel alert. We will be monitoring the situation closely.
