There is also a lecture theatre where you can learn more about this part of the world. All of your meals onboard are included, and you can enjoy free snacks, tea and coffee. Day 2

Orkney

Aberdeen - Orkney. Overnight we sail between the Outer and Inner Hebrides, arriving at the windy archipelago of Orkney in the morning. We go ashore to the town of Kirkwall and there's an optional excursion to visit the Skara Brae archaeological site, Northern Europe's Pompeii. This Neolithic settlement was hidden by nature for 5,000 years before a massive storm uncovered the ancient site.

Returning to Kirkwall, we visit Highland Park, considered by many to be the best whiskey distillery in the world.

Day 3

Exploring the Faroe Islands

Orkney - The Faroe Islands. Shortly after breakfast we arrive at Torshavn, the capital of the Faroes. The city is located on Streymoy, the largest and most populated of the 18 islands which make up the country. There's free time to independently visit the charming grass-roofed Parliament building or to admire the stunning coastline. Alternatively, perhaps pay a visit to the old citadel, located near the harbour.

You may wish to join an optional coach excursion over the mountains to Kirkjubour, the Faroes' most important historical site. In medieval times it was the religious and cultural capital of the country. We visit the impressive ruins of the Magnus Cathedral and Saint Olav Church - the only remaining medieval church on the island. We then return to Torshavn.

Day 5

Westman Islands, Surtsey & Heimaey

The Faroe Islands - The Westman Islands (Iceland). Today we'll be exploring the Westman Islands, a tiny, mostly uninhabited archipelago located around 14km off the south coast of Iceland. Compared by an Icelandic poet to the sapphires on a silver ring, the beautiful collection of islands is a wonderful sight to sail past. Puffins and gannets can be spotted on the islands as we sail.

We pass by UNESCO-listed Surtsey, where only researchers are allowed to dock, and stop at Heimaey. This is the only inhabited island in the Westman Islands, with a population of around 4,000. The site of a volcanic eruption and subsequent evacuation in 1973, we can see some of the recently excavated houses from the eruption.
