Home to the world famous Golden Temple and the seat of the Sikh religion, Amritsar is one of the Punjab’s principal cities. Built in 1803 and made of marble, copper and pure leaf gold, the temple is an amazing architectural feat. Morning visit to Golden temple and followed by a sightseeing tour of the city. Also you will enjoy a visit to Wagah - the only border crossing between India and Pakistan - for the sunset ‘Retreat’ ceremony, where the changing of the guards & lowering of the flags is performed with great pomp and ceremony.
Enjoy the majority of the day at leisure before later this afternoon we transfer you to the railway station for your train to Delhi (Swarna Shtabadi, 1655/2305, Executive Chair Car) where upon your arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
Today we explore both Old and New Delhi. The order of New Delhi is a huge contrast to the disorganised chaos of the Old City but both are just as appealing. Taking in the impressive Red Fort, Jama Masjid - India’s oldest and largest mosque, Raj Ghat - the site of Gandhi’s cremation and more.
Today enjoy an excursion to the city of Meerut, an ancient city with settlements dating back to the Indus Valley civilization having been found in and around the area.
An early morning start today as we drive you to Agra - home of India's famous attraction - the Taj Mahal. Upon arrival we will have a sightseeing tour of the Agra Fort, before watching the sun set on the Taj Mahal itself.
This morning we will take a drive out to the ghostly fortifed city of Fatehpur Sikri, abandoned only eight years after its construction due to droughts in the area. We continue on through the Rajasthan countryside to the capital of Rajasthan, the Pink City of Jaipur, so named beacuse of the terracotta pink colour of the buildings, painted to welcome the Prince of Wales in 1876.
This morning early, you will float above Jaipur in a hot air balloon, seeing this beautiful Rajasthani city from above. We then visit the delicate pink, magnificent fort-palace of Amber - a wonderful example of Rajput architecture just north of Jaipur. Subject to Government regulations, we will arrive in style on top of an elephant! Enjoy an afternoon sightseeing tour of the city, taking in the City Palace, which boasts an interesting museum of regal attire and Jantar Mantar, an ancient astronomical observatory.
Departing Jaipur today we drive back to Delhi from where you will board your flight east to the holy city of Varanasi (6E 176, 1640/1800, Economy). Upon your arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
This morning, we enjoy a sunrise boat ride on the holy Ganges where we’ll view the ancient religious tradition of ritual cleansing that takes place on the many riverbank ghats (riverside steps). Later, we embark on a tour of the famous Buddhist holy city and Sarnath, which is where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon to the five holy men; preaching the middleway to final 'NIRVANA’. This evening return to the banks of the Ganges to witness an Aarti ceremony.
Departing Varanasi today we drive to Patna.
Over the next two days witness the Sonepur Festival, the biggest cattle fair in Asia. The Sonepur Cattle Fair once used to attract traders from places as distant as Central Asia. The annual Sonepur Fair in Bihar is an authentic rural fair that combines spirituality with elephant, cattle, and horse trading. It gets underway on the auspicious Hindu holy occasion of Kartik Purnima, when pilgrims take an early morning bath in the river, and continues for around three weeks. Street magicians, spiritual gurus, snack stalls, handicrafts, amusement rides, circus performers, and theatre all create a carnival like no other.
After a leisurely breakfast we will transfer you to the airport for your flight back to Delhi (G8 144, 1300/1440, Economy) where you will connect with your onward departure flight.
