About Gulmarg

The large and beautiful meadow of Gulmarg lies at a stunning altitude of 2730m and is around 50km southwest of Srinagar in the Jammu and Kashmir region of far northern India. Gulmarg means ‘meadow of flowers’ and it lives up to this description in spring, when there are flowers everywhere at this hill station.

The town witnessed militancy in the 1990s, but after a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in 2003, the town is now enjoying a period of peace and quiet.

The slopes of the Afarwat Hills of the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas allow Gulmarg to offer one of the longest and highest ski slopes in Asia. The total distance covered by ski lifts is approximately 5km. Gulmarg boasts of Asia's highest and longest cable car project, the Gulmarg Gondola. The two-stage ropeway ferries about 600 people per hour to and from Kongdoori Mountain, a shoulder of nearby Afarwat Peak (4200m). The ropeway project is a joint venture of the Jammu and Kashmir government and a French firm. As such, security is very high owing to the investment in tourist and also the proximity to the Line of Control.

There are no permanent residents in Gulmarg. Living in Gulmarg are seasonal hotel employees and guests. All others leave Gulmarg before sunset. The peak alpine season runs from around December through to April.
