Scattered throughout this historical area are a number of important monuments and structures, which should certainly be on your sight-seeing list. First up is the Charminar, which was built in 1591 as a lucky charm to ward of a disease that was spreading across the region at the time. Its majestic minarets are a sight to behold and its imposing presence is awe-inspiring to say the least. Just a couple of hundred metres away from the Charminar is Mecca Masjid, so named because its bricks were brought over from Mecca. It is one of the largest mosques in Hyderabad.
Other historical sites worth visiting include the fascinating Golconda Fort, a crumbling fort with a curious past, and the Salar Jung Museum, which is filled with art from all over the continent as well as bits and pieces from the Americas. In the evenings, once the heat of the day has subsided, take a stroll along the promenade of Hussain Sagar Lake or have dinner on board one of the numerous boats.
