Historically, Jeypore featured prominently during the reign of Sri Vira Bikram Dev in the 17th century, with the removal of the capital of the kingdom from Nadapur to Jeypore. A legacy of these times are a number of old palaces. There are ruins of an old fort and a great water tank known as Jagannath Sagar.

The main festivals of the town are Dasahara, Ganesh Pooja and Ratha Yatra. Dasahara, also called Durga Pooja lasts for 16 days and includes several ceremonies in honour of the goddess Kanak Durga, whose temple is within the palace. During the Raj, Jeypore was a seat of administration until 1870, when it was shifted to Koraput, as then Jeypore was highly infected with Malaria. It was believed that Koraput would be a healthier place on account of its higher elevation and open countryside.

Jeypore is an ideal place base to explore the surrounding tribal areas. North of Jeypore, Onkadelli village has a wonderful Thursday market, where the Bonda, Gadaba, Malic and Didai tribes, dressed in brightly coloured clothing and jewellery, congregate to trade goods.

Beyond Jeypore, there are further sights of interest including Gupteswar Temple, Jagannath Temple and the old Dakhin Kali temple at Purunagarh. The Upper Kolab Dam and also Machkund Dam near Jeypore generate hydroelectric power for the state of Orissa.
