Mumbai - or Bombay, as it was formerly known - remains India’s city of dreams. Built largely by the British around one of the best-protected natural harbours in the world, Mumbai is India’s strategic economic centre. The city is also home to the country’s prolific Bollywood film industry, which cranks out more feature films than any place in the world. The streets here are bustling with people from every walk of life and are lined with colourful markets, street food vendors and boutiques. This city is a hive of activity, with excitement waiting on every corner.Read More
In the Colaba area, be sure to head to the Gateway of India – a former colonial monument built in 1924 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1991 and now a popular emblem and attraction of the city, where travellers flock to snap a few photos. The downtown area contains numerous sights such as the Prince of Wales Museum, the Kala Ghoda Art Galleries and the vast green Oval Maidan where impromptu cricket matches are held almost daily. Raj-era architecture is apparent at Horniman Circle, the Town Hall, St Thomas’ Cathedral and Victoria Terminus.
Perhaps sample bhelpuri (Mumbai’s favourite snack) at Chowpatty Beach along what is known as Marine Drive, one of the city’s most popular promenades. Another popular activity for visitors here is to pay a visit to the bazaars of Kalbadevi and Bluleshwar, north of Crawford Market. Just beyond Mumbai (and reached by boat) are the rock-cut temples on Elephanta Island. The 4 rock-cut temples are believed to have been cut between 450-750AD.
