About Nagaland

Rugged and captivating, Nagaland represents one of India's last vestiges of tribal life. Numerous different tribes, including the Angami, Rengma and Zeilang, adorned in traditional garb, can still be found throughout the region and often welcome visitors in to their homes for meals or shelter. Catching a glimpse of these authentic and fascinating individuals is truly a once in a lifetime experience and visitors should take the time to get to grips with the cultural heritage and identity of the various tribespeople they encounter.

Throughout the villages that make up Nagaland are several historic sites worth checking out. In Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, there is a state museum, which is filled with information about the Naga tribes and how they live. In the village of Touphema there is another museum, displaying various traditional artefacts and pieces of jewellery. Carrying on along the route, you will encounter the Lotha Nagas who are famed in the region for their spectacular dancing and singing.

Dimapur is often popular among travellers because of its picturesque landscape and its curious Kachari ruins. Another place on interest is the Dzoukou Valley, which can be trekked and is possibly one of the most beautiful places in the state. Hiking Japfu's Peak is a great way to spend the day and offers the best views out over the valley. Alternatively, nature lovers might want to head to the Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary. Within this lush reserve, tigers, langurs, monitor lizards and pythons can all be found.
