About Patna

Modern Patna stretches along the S bank of the Ganga for about 15 km. Divided in 2 by the Maidan, a large open park. Patna’s buildings reflect its administrative and educational functions. Golghar – The gola or round house is the extraordinary 29m high bee-hive shaped structure between the Maidan and the Ganga. For an excellent view of the city and the Ganga, it is well worth climbing the steps of Golghar. At the eastern end of the city, in the Chowk area of old Patna stands one of the holiest sikh shrines. Built of white marble by Ranjit Singh.

Qila House, the private house was built over the ruins of Sher Shah’s fort. It contains an impressive private collection of antiques. An excellent, albeit somewhat dog-eared, museum contains metal and stone sculptures dating back to the Maurya and Gupta Periods.

Other attractions include Mahavir Mandir, dedicated to hanuman. The heavy, domed Sher Shahi, is the oldest mosque in Patna
