Popularly known as Mahatma (Sanskrit for ‘great soul’), Gandhi was one of the founding fathers of the modern Indian state and an influential advocate of Satyagraha (non-violent protest) as a means of revolution. He helped bring about India’s Independence from British rule, inspiring other colonial peoples to work for their own independence. Assassinated in 1948, his values and beliefs are still revered in our changing world.

Rajkot’s most appealing area is the old city, where there are lots of traditional Gujarati wooden-fronted houses with intricately carved shutters and stained glass windows. Kaba Gandhi No Delo located in the old city, is the house where Gandhi grew up, and it now holds a small exhibition of Gandhi artifacts and photographs.

The other chief attraction in Rajkot is the Watson Museum. Named after Colonel Watson, the museum houses an awesome collection from 2000 BC to the 19th century. On the ground floor is a statue of Queen Victoria, fashioned in 1899 by Alfred Gilbert who modeled the Statue of Eros in London’s Piccadilly Circus.
