Built in 1439, the main Jain temple at Ranakpur is dedicated to Adinath. Known as the Chaumukha Temple, or Four-Faced Temple, this huge and superbly crafted building possesses 29 halls supported by an astonishing 1444 pillars, no two alike. The temple, with its distinctive domes, shikhara, turrets and cupolas rises majestically from the slope of a hill.

The dating of the temple is controversial though it is largely considered to be anywhere between the late 14th to mid-15th centuries. Inspired by a dream of a celestial vehicle, Dharna Shah, a Porwad, is said to have commissioned it, under the patronage of Rana Kumbha, then ruler of Mewad. The temple was purportedly nominated as one of the top 77 wonders in a contest to Seven Wonders of the World.

Within the complex are two other Jain temples to Neminath and Parasnath. The temples boast beautiful carvings similar to those of Khajuraho.

A short distance away is the Sun Temple, an 8th century A.D. temple dedicated to the Sun god. The temple has polygonal walls richly embellished with carvings of warriors, horses and solar deities riding splendid chariots.
