Formerly known as Tanjore, Thanjavur is a striking town where antiquity and modernity collide in a dizzying whirl of colour and sound. With many UNESCO World Heritage listed Chola temples within its borders, Thanjavur is considered to be one of South India's foremost centres for architecture and art. The landscape of the region comprises lush green fields and verdant swathes of jungle as well as red dirt roads and quaint paved streets. While Thanjavur is usually overlooked by travellers to India's southern regions, the cultural significance of the town is of the highest order and is well worth taking the time to understand.Read More
The most popular attraction in Thanjavur, without any shadow of a doubt, is the breathtaking Brihadishwara Temple, which was constructed by King Rajaraja I around 1010 AD in honour of Shiva. Its impressive facades and grandiose design, are typical of the wealth and opulence among the rulers of that time. The temple is fascinating to explore and there is an archaeological museum, which details the history of the structures and showcases some interesting artefacts and sculptures.
Second to the Brihadishwara Temple only by a small margin is the Royal Palace Compound. Whilst some parts of the palace are not in the most pristine of conditions, every crumble tells a story. Within the labyrinthine complex are a number of different places of interest including the Thanjavur Art Gallery and the Saraswati Mahal Library and Museum. Wandering through the confines of the compound is sure to leave you in awe of its magnificence, while the museum should quench your thirst for knowledge.
