Day 1


Friday 05 October 2018. Upon arrival to Tokyo or Hanada Airport you will be met and escorted by shuttle bus or Express train (depending upon the time of day you arrive) to our tour start hotel. This evening we host a welcome meeting with the opportunity to head out afterward to a local bar for a drink.

Day 2


Today enjoy a full day of guided sightseeing in Japan’s buzzing capital city. We will start the day at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building; rising up above the city we will be able to admire views from the tower's lofty heights. Next we will visit Meiji shrine, one of Tokyo’s most formal shrines, followed by a tour of the Harajuku shopping area. In the afternoon we will explore the Hamarikyu gardens where we will enjoy a break in a local tea house. Later we will take a Sumida River Bus to the historic Asakusa area, where we will visit the Sensoji temple and explore Nakamise dori.

Day 3

Nikko Day Trip

Tokyo – Nikko – Tokyo. We take a day trip to Nikko today, a small town that has long found itself as a centre for Buddhist and Shinto worship. Here we will visit the World Heritage sights of Tosho-gu - Japan's most lavishly decorated shrine, and also see the Shonkyo bridge. Set amidst beautiful natural scenery, Nikko has long found itself as a centre for Buddhist and Shinto worship, and is always a favourite day trip from Tokyo.

Day 4

Takayama Autumn Festival

Nagoya – Takayama. This morning we take a bullet train to Nagoya where upon arrival we transfer to another train for our journey through the picturesque Japanese Alps to Takayama, a delightful town in the heart of the Hida Mountains. It just so happens that our tour perfectly coincides with the revelry of the Takayama Autumn Festival, which sees the streets of this small town burst into a kaleidoscope of colour every year. Lucky us!

Here we will witness a huge procession of festival floats pass through the streets, accompanied by hundreds of locals in colourful traditional dress. These ornately decorated floats will feature intricate mechanical dolls, which move and dance to the rhythm of music under the control of skilled puppeteers hidden within the floats. This popular autumn festival sees locals and travellers alike flock to this procession, creating a exciting festive atmosphere throughout the town.

Day 5

Free day to enjoy the festivities

Today is free for you to browse the morning markets and to later enjoy the festivities in the afternoon. Alternatively, if you feel like exploring on your own you can head to the outskirts of town to a fascinating Hida folk village, where old farm houses from the region have been brought together and rebuilt on a hillside overlooking the town, which is just a ten minute bus ride away. Or if you fancy heading further out, the historic World Heritage Village of Shirkawa is an hour away by bus.

Day 6

Takayama to Kyoto

Takayama – Kyoto. Leaving Takayama behind, this morning we board our train back to Nagoya where upon arrival we take a bullet train to Kyoto, Japan’s ancient capital and cultural centre. Once in Kyoto we’ll pay a visit to Fushimi Inarai Shrine, set on a mountainside and famed for its two dense parallel rows of red gates known as Senbon Torri. We’ll enjoy some free time here to wander around its ground as the sun sets over the city below.

Day 7

Sightseeing & Afternoon Tea

Today we enjoy a full day of sightseeing in Kyoto, kicking off with a morning train to Arashiyama in western Kyoto. Here we’ll see the famous bamboo walk – perhaps one of the most photographed attractions in the city, before visiting the Zen Temple and garden of Tenryu-ji. Later we’ll stop in at UNESCO-listed Nijo Castle and then continue on to the Gion Geisha district. This evening there will be an optional excursion to a performing arts show with a maiko (apprentice geisha) performing a dance.

Day 8

Hiroshima Peace Park & Museum

Today we travel by train and ferry to Hiroshima, a city that needs little introduction, it is of course infamous for being the first site where one of two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan at the end of World War II. This morning we visit Peace Park and Peace Park Museum which are a moving reminder of Hiroshima’s tragic past. We’ll see the iconic A-Bomb Dome one of the very few buildings left standing after the blast. This afternoon we return to Kyoto and this evening is at your leisure to further discover all this fascinating city has to offer.

Day 9

Hakone NP & Mt Fuji

Kyoto – Hakone. Today a bullet train will take us to Hakone National Park, in the foothills of the iconic Mount Fuji, where we will spend the day exploring the local area. Here you will have access to unlimited travel on nearly all the local modes of transport here – from mountain buses and railway to cable cars and funicular railways, thanks to your Hakone Free Pass card. Admire views of Mount Fuji on a cable car ride to Owakudani, take a pirate ship across Lake Ashi and visit Cedar Avenue.

Day 10

Hakone to Tokyo

Hakone – Tokyo. This morning we begin our train journey back to Tokyo, where we will be staying in Shinjuku, one of the most modern districts in the city. Today is a great opportunity to do any last minute shopping or sightseeing before our tour comes to an end tomorrow.

Day 11

Goodbye Japan!

Monday 15 Oct 2018. Today our tour comes to an end. Included departure transfer (not escorted) to the airport. We hope you've had a wonderful holiday.
