Located on the shores of the Red Sea at the southernmost point of the country, Aqaba is Jordan's prime beach destination. Once a sleepy fishing village, Aqaba maintains a pleasant laid-back vibe whilst offering luxury hotels and waterfront developments up and down the coast. The Corniche backs onto the city centre, a dense maze of alleys with plenty of shopping opportunities. Aqaba also makes an excellent springboard for exploring neighbouring Egypt and Israel.Read More
Some of the best diving and snorkelling opportunities can be found in the Red Sea and there are a number of dive centres in Aqaba. The year-round mild water temperatures and gentle currents create the perfect environment for exploring the colourful coral reefs and the accompanying marine life. These deep sea wonders can also be enjoyed from glass-bottom boats that circle the bay and there are a host of other water-based activities to choose from including water skiing and windsurfing.
On land it's worth paying a visit to Mamluke fort, the scene of a great Arab victory back in 1916 though the castle was originally built back in the 14th century. Nearby is the Aqaba Archaeological Museum, which houses a range of Bronze Age artifacts discovered in the region. Aqaba is also home to the oldest, purpose-built church in the world. Although the ancient church of Ayla is now little more than ruined foundations, some of the building's walls have been relatively well-preserved and reach two metres in height.
