We have two new Morocco group tours - Casablanca to Essaouira and Best of Morocco - that cover the imperial cities, rugged landscapes and awe-inspiring Sahara desert with the addition of three days at leisure in the coastal resort of Essaouira, an exotic vision of fortified walls, narrow alleyways and wind-swept beach for the perfect balance of adventure and leisure.
Recommended places to visit in Morocco
Whether you're looking for an authentic desert experience, trekking opportunities or exotic cities, Morocco has something for everyone but there are a few destinations that should be on every first-time visit and here's our selection.
Perched high up in the Rif Mountains, the picturesque city of Chefchaouen is renowned for its pretty blue-washed doors and buildings. The main square is the heart of the city and an absolute delight to explore with an 18th century Kasbah, central mosque, buzzing cafes and colourful market stalls. There's also a Jewish quarter that has a very different atmosphere to the main Arabic part of town.
No trip to Morocco would be complete without a camel trek out into the vast Sahara Desert – and we mean it! Ride saddle-back across the towering Erg Chebbi sand dunes to a traditional Berber camp and enjoy an evening eating local food, listening to music and dancing around a camp fire before retiring for a night under the stars. If you only do one thing in Morocco, this is it!
Once the favourite haunt of legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and Orson Wells, Essaouria is the perfect spot to unwind, eat great seafood and watch the world go by. Originally encircled by the old walls of the medina, the town has grown since but it still easy to explore by foot. A long and wide sandy beach stretches out in front of the medina, with plenty of nearby cafes and terraces.
Step back in time in Fes, the oldest and largest medieval city in the world. In the medina you’ll be greeted by a heady mix of aromas, sights and sounds where you can easily lose yourself and your senses. Wander the streets, see the pungent tanneries in action, chat with the locals, browse market stalls with a variety of wares and practise your bargaining skills.
A city brimming with character, you could easily lose track of time in Marrakech. The medina and market square of Djemaa el Fna are the beating heart of the old city, with narrows passageways lined with overflowing shops, crisscrossing alleyways with lively cafes and restaurants and a maze of covered markets rich in aromas, exotic sights and sounds.
Formed millions of years ago, Todra Gorge snakes its way through the rugged High Atlas Mountain and is an incredibly dramatic sight to behold. With spectacular scenery, the ever changing colours of the rock faces and the hubbub of locals passing through it is the perfect place to stop for a while. Plus there’s opportunity to go trekking, try rock climbing, horse riding and more outdoor pursuits.
