About Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek
The breathtaking mountain scenery and beautiful ethnic villages justify the popularity of trekking the Ghorepani Poon Hill route in Nepal's Annapurna mountain range. Following fresh water streams and flower-filled forests, the trek is a relatively moderate one in terms of difficulty with frequent rest stops and a maximum elevation of 3,210 m, which means altitude sickness is not a concern. The wide and well-maintained trails pass outstanding vistas of the surrounding mountain peaks and wind their way to Gurung and Magar villages, which feature comfortable lodges. For these reasons it's one of the region's most popular treks and can be busy in the peak trekking months.Read More
The trek takes between four and six days, stopping at a different lodge each night with days averaging seven hours of walking. The viewpoint of Poon Hill (3,193m) is the final destination on this trek though the routes that get you there vary. The most trodden route is a loop from Pokhara that starts at Birethanti with an uphill slog to the Bhurungdi Khola Valley and on to Ghorepani. From here trekkers rise early and make the 45 minute hike to Poon Hill to watch sunrise over the Himalayas. The trail back to Pokhara descends to Tadapani for more fine views and continues to the ethnic village of Ghandruk.
The accommodation along the trek is basic but comfortable and take the form of teahouses. They have a dining room where you can enjoy a filling meal at the end of a hard day trekking. Rooms are on a twin-share basis with shared bathroom facilities though hot showers are usually available. Despite the lack of facilities, these lodges certainly have a rustic charm. Most are blessed with spectacular views and being family-run operations, offer a great insight into the daily life of the Himalayan people.
