Itinerary

Day 1

St Petersburg

Saturday. Welcome to Russia and the start of your holiday! Meet and greet arrival transfer from St Petersburg Pulkovo Airport to your hotel and check in. This evening you'll be treated to dinner with the rest of your group at the hotel, followed by an informative welcome meeting. Remainder of the evening at leisure - your tour guide can recommend some local bars for you to try out.
Overnight: St Petersburg  |  Dinner

Day 2

The Hermitage

This morning a driving tour will give us a run-down on some of St Petersburg's key areas. Travelling by mini bus we will make our way along the famed Nevsky Prospekt, past the museum and university districts and a few stops will be made along the way to see the magnificent St Isaac's Cathedral and The Bronze Horseman. Later, we will enjoy a guided tour of the Hermitage - which houses one of the biggest and best art collections on earth. The rest of the day is free for you to further explore. Most of the city sights are dotted along and just off the main thoroughfare - Nevsky Prospekt. It’s an easy city to find your bearings and get around. St Petersburg has a spirited restaurant, bar and jazz club scene, plus some of Russia’s best beers.

During our time in St Petersburg there may be the chance to join one of our optional evening excursions, such as a canal cruise (May to September), a traditional Cossacks performance or a night at the Russian Ballet. There may even be the chance to try your hand at preparing Russian cuisine with an interactive cooking class. All optional excursions are subject to availability, and are booked and payable locally.
Overnight: St Petersburg  |  Breakfast

Day 3

St Pete's sightseeing

Today's touring includes either the beautifully landscaped gardens of Peterhof in summer or the lavish interiors of Catherine's Palace at Tsarskoe Selo in winter (or Pavlosk Palace if Catherine's Palace is closed). We'll also visit Peter & Paul Cathedral within Peter & Paul Fortress, which houses the tombs of the Romanov monarchs. After stopping for a hearty traditional lunch at a local restaurant, we'll continue on for a guided tour of the exquisite interior of The Church on Spilled Blood.
Overnight: St Petersburg  |  Breakfast, Lunch

Day 4

Time to Explore

St Petersburg – Novgorod. As our last day in St Petersburg, today gives you the opportunity to shop for some last minute souvenirs, perhaps some traditional Russian nesting dolls or some Russian memorabilia found at the canal side market near the striking Church on Spilled Blood. Alternatively take a walk along Nevsky Prospekt. Later this afternoon we travel to Novgorod, arriving in time for dinner and a steamy Russian banya (sauna).
Overnight: Novgorod  |  Breakfast, Dinner

Day 5

Novgorod

Novgorod – Moscow. Novgorod is one of Russia’s oldest cities, located within reach of the Volkhov River and Lake Ilmen, that was formed as a town in the middle of the 10th century. A guided tour of Novgorod takes in the riverside fortified Kremlin, cathedral and other sights of interest. The Kremlin fortress was mentioned in chronicles as early as in 1044, whilst today’s walls and towers, despite being re-built in 15th century, are impressive all the same. Tonight we have dinner before travelling by overnight sleeper train from Novgorod to Moscow.
Overnight: Sleeper Train  |  Breakfast, Dinner

Day 6

Moscow

Early this morning, we arrive into Moscow - the capital that spawned dozens of spy novels! Today we will ride on the capital’s efficient Metro to Red Square. From here, we’ll take in the jewels of Russia’s capital on a guided walking tour, taking in sights such as the epitome of Russian power – the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and the ritzy GUM department store.

At the south end of the square, feast your eyes on the wildly coloured, turban domed St Basil’s Cathedral, an enduring Russian symbol commissioned by Ivan IV (also known as Ivan the terrible) in 1555. Spend the remainder of the day at your own leisure.

During our stay in Moscow there will be the chance to join one of our optional evening excursions, such as a night at the famous Moscow Circus (Oct - May), a traditional Cossack Show or a Moscow by Night coach tour.
Overnight: Moscow  |  Breakfast

Day 7

The Kremlin

This morning we head back to Red Square to pay our respects to Lenin - the grandfather of Communism, at his eerie mausoleum. It is here that his embalmed body has lain in state since his death in 1924. Later we will continue to the Kremlin - Russia’s bastion of political might, where we enjoy a guided walk through the grounds, seeing numerous government buildings, gold-domed cathedrals and the tsar bell.
Overnight: Moscow  |  Breakfast

Day 8

Red Square

Today is free for you to explore Moscow at your own pace, and there are plenty of galleries, museums and shops to keep you entertained. The efficient Metro system - and your included Metro pass, means that exploring the city couldn't be easier. This evening consider sampling Moscow’s nightlife, which can rival any of the world’s capital cities!

Alternatively we offer an optional guided tour of a formerly top secret Cold War bunker turned museum today - book and pay locally. Up until recently this Stalinist-era Soviet Bunker was a secret symbol of Soviet Power. Hidden beneath an ordinary two storey apartment building in Moscow, 18 floors below ground level, this 75,000 square foot facility was constructed covertly, in the 1950s, to protect against the threat of a US nuclear attack. In the 1990s this bunker came off the top secret list and is now open to the public.
Overnight: Moscow  |  Breakfast

Day 9

Moscow

Sunday. Our tour ends after breakfast and hotel check out.

Daria what absolutely brilliant. She completely made this trip for us. She was knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming and heaps of fun. She looked after us fabulously. I would happily do a tour with Daria again any time.

Daria (Dasha) was excellent, I cannot fault her. Everything was explained clearly to us regarding the tour, she was punctual and her history knowledge was outstanding. Any questions we had she was able to answer. She made us feel as if we were truly having a Russian experience in all the activities, and if there was something I wished to do during free time she gladly explained to me transport instructions or organised it for me.

I had a great time on the tour, Dasha was excellent and I learnt to much about Russia and Russian Culture. I really enjoyed the variety of activities and places we went but I would have liked the option to pre-pay for some of the optional excursions! I ended up spending a lot more than I was expecting in country because of the excursions all being paid locally

Maria was very knowledgeable about places we went. Very easy to get along with, and open to discussing pretty much anything. Took the time to find out things we might like to do during free time, and made sure that we were given the information needed to find the places. I quite enjoyed visiting with her on the trip, and hope that others who take this tour, are as lucky as I was, to get her for a guide.

As for the tour, I personally, would have preferred spending more time in St. Petersburg, and Novgorod (countryside), than in Moscow. It almost seemed as if other than the Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral, unless you were doing optional excursions, that was all there was to do there, in relation to the tour. There seemed like so much more to see and do and explore in and around St. Petersburg, with all the churches, palaces, the various canals, and shops and the Hermitage, which was my personal highlight of the tour.

Excellent tour made better by our first class tour guide, Dasha. Dasha had excellent knowledge of the country, the history and the places we visited. She handled any issues capably and without fuss. Excellent work.

The tour was wonderful, everything I'd hoped for. I saw almost everything I had on my list, the only places I missed were due to the Victory Day celebrations being on and things being closed. I loved the variety of history and culture on the tour and trying so many new things. I felt like I saw a lot of different aspects of Russia which was wonderful.

My only feedback would be sometimes due to the times of activities, it made it difficult to eat meals at a reasonable time (for example meeting at 6 for an evening activity, so we had to have dinner super early or really late).

Dasha our guide was excellent, probably the best group tour guide I've ever had. She was very knowledgeable, fun and patient (which can sometimes be tough in big groups!)

A wonderful tour, I can't wait to start planning the next one!

WE LOVED RUSSIA! As a country, it exceeded our expectations in all areas and we wouldn't hesitate recommending it as a destination to friends. The tour was well structured and we feel that we really made the most of our time there with a great mix of sight seeing and free time. The level of accommodation was good and hotels were located in convenient locations. What made the tour exceptional, however, was our guide Dasha! She made each sight we visited so interesting and was willing and able to answer any questions that our group had. She was extremely organised, which made our tour run so smoothly, and has a lovely personality too! Thank you Dasha for making our Russian experience such a fantastic one.

I thought the tour was EXCELLENT!!! It was made even more fabulous by our amazing tour guide, Dasha. She really went out of her way to make everyone feel comfortable and to make sure we all had a good time. I especially appreciate how she went out of her way to personally guide me on the Moscow subway station to see the State Tretyokov Gallery. This was after the tour was over and she just did it out of the kindness of her heart. I think she is a fantastic person as well as a fantastic guide!! I wish her all the best in her future career. Cheers, Margaret Lawther

I have been hesitant about group tours, but I knew going to Russia I would have to join a group. Thank god I did, I had such a great time on the tour and whilst it was a small group of only 6 we got along great and it made the whole experience so memorable. Our tour leader Dasha was amazing she was full of knowledge and passion. She helped us explore Russia and gave us a personal perspective of the country, which she loves so much. The tour group would have been completely lost without her. I was thoroughly impressed with the level of accommodation, all three hotels were better than I expected and made the stay so comfortable. Overall it was a great tour to sample a bit of Russia and I will definitely be going back to St Petersburg. Now time to book my next tour!
