Spread out along South Africa's East coast, Durban is a seaside town with an urban glaze. Skyscrapers line the golden sand of the beaches that stretch out into the cool waves of the Indian Ocean creating some exceptional scenery. What may come as a surprise to many is the fact that Durban is home to the largest concentration of Indian people outside of any city in India and the influences that 19th century South Asian migrants brought to Durban mingle with the native African culture to create a vibrant melting pot. This unique blend makes Durban all the more appealing as it is well-endowed with Indian markets selling spices, kurtas and food, all accompanied by a general subcontinental vibe.Read More
Durban is a top destination for anyone looking for a bit of fresh air and outdoor activity. Biking the Golden Mile is a great way to see the stunning coastline whilst getting some exercise while you're at it. For something more leisurely, many visitors choose to visit the Durban Botanical Gardens, which is Africa's oldest botanical garden and has a vast collection of what are known as "living fossil" plants. If you're feeling particularly adventurous you might even want to try dining at the Cargo Hold, a restaurant submerged in a shark tank.
Of course, one of the main reasons that travellers flock to South Africa is to catch a glimpse of some of the impressive game that inhabits the land. While there are no safari opportunities in central Durban, less than an hour away is the Tala Game Reserve. This 7,500 acre park offers visitors the chance to participate in a Bushwalk, usually lasting around 2 hours, during which they will get to see all manner of different animals including hippos, giraffes and rhinos.
