Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park

About Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park

Straddling the borders between South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park is one of the world's most spectacular wildlife kingdoms. The park links together various parks from the three countries: South Africa's Kruger National Park, Mozambique's Limpopo National Park and Zimbabwe's Gonarezhou National Park, Manjinji Pan Sanctuary and Malipati Safari Area. The combination of these areas makes this colossal cross-border reserve, stretching out across 100,000 sq km, an absolute must for anyone looking for the ultimate game-viewing experience in Southern Africa.

Naturally, with a park this size one can expect the topography to be vastly diverse. Five major rivers run through the region, meaning that the vegetation goes from lush woodland to dry savannah, with some mountainous areas thrown in as well. These different landscapes allow for a great number of species to reside within the park. The mission of the transfrontier park is to remove all human barriers that have been installed in the parks in the past. By removing these blockades, animals are able to move around freely and to follow their traditional migratory paths.

In the past decade or so thousands of creatures have independently crossed the border between the Kruger and Limpopo National Park areas, many of which being elephants and buffalo. This translocation has resulted in less over-population of the Kruger park and, therefore, more space and resources for all of the wildlife that resides in the region. Visitors to the park are likely to spot a huge range of different animals including rhinos, cheetah, giraffes and lions.
