Stop At: Prado National Museum, Calle Ruiz de Alarcon 23, 28014 Madrid Spain

The building that today houses the Prado national museum was designed by architect Juan de Villanueva in 1785. It was constructed to house the Natural History Cabinet, by orders of King Charles III.

The Museum's first catalogue, published in 1819, included 311 paintings, although at that time its collection comprised just over 1,510 pictures from the various Reales Sitios (Royal Residences). The exceptionally important royal collection, which represents the foundation of the Museum's compilation as we know it today, increased significantly in the 16th century during the time of Charles V and continued to thrive under the succeeding Habsburg and Bourbon Monarchs.

The visit will take place in chronological order,
- Starting with the exhibit hall where we will find J. Bosch’ masterpieces (El Bosco) (1450-1516): The Table of the 7 Deadly Sins, The Hay Wain, The temptations of San Antonio, The Stone of Madness and The Garden of Delights.
- We will then move on to the rooms dedicated to El Greco (1540-1614): The gentleman's hand on his chest, The Trinity, Christ embraced the cross and The Annunciation;
- Velázquez (1599-1660): The Worship, Drunkards, Equestrian Portraits, the Forge of Vulcan, The Christ, The spinners, Spears and Las Meninas.
- We will end with Goya (1746-1828): The family of Carlos IV Pictures, The Shootings of May 2, Pestles and Black Paintings.

Our guide was knowledgeable and spent time on the greatest (in our opinion) paintings -- by Goya and Bosch. However, even though she used a cane she race-walked throughout, so it was difficult for some of us to keep up (but we managed). All things considered, we really loved this tour and fulfilled another item on our bucket lists. We are a mother-daughter team who loves to travel together.(For some strange reason, you do not have a category for us so I had to check off "solo".)

Our guide was knowledgeable, and in a museum so vast and crowded in the fall season, it was great to be guided directly to the top works of art. After the tour, we took a break and then went back for some more on our own.

Our guide was excellent ...clearly explaining the most significant paintings. She was upbeat and very interesting

The Prada is a must see if you want to see some of the most famous historic paintings in the world. The tour started off a bit sketchy with the meeting place and guides but once it was sorted out the guide was excellent, knowledgeable and informative. Once the tour was complete we were set free to see the museum on our own time and terms. It was worth every penny.

Terrific tour, much better than the one we took at Louvre. Our guide Macarena was informative and amusing. She picked a nice selection of paintings and gave interesting insights into each. Plus the technology worked well.

We took this tour of the Prado Museum with Isabella. We do not usually enjoy this type of art, but felt we needed to go to the Prado Museum while in Madrid. She is a wealth of knowledge on the history of Spain, the classics and how the great artists influenced pop artists such as Piscasso and Dali. The 2 hour tour flew by. I wish we could have spent more time at the museum with Isabella.

Focused tour by delightful guide. Truly enjoyed. I appreciated a chronological tour of a defined number of paintings.

Skipping the line was worth the extra cost but having a bilingual guide who knew how to find the masterworks and explain the art in a historical context was a real plus. I am not sure how it compares to the rental audio available at the museum but the interactive nature was more fun. I highly recommend this tour.

If you are visiting Madrid, you simply have to go! This place is simply a wonder! If you can spare more than 2 hours, take the 5 hour tour. I was attending a festival in town and could not give up the longer time frame. The Prado wound up being the last of several great tours I took in Madrid, and it worked out really well. Everything is here! So if you can remember some of the history lessons from previous tour guides, it will all come together in the Prado. Though the tour lasted two hours, you could stay and look around on your own after the tour. You could also leave and re-enter the Prado on the same day with your ticket. I was “taken aback” by the immense size of these paintings. They are not small. They are epic. These tours depend on the guide, and we had a wonderful guide from Julia Tours. I believe her name was Arroyo, but I forgot to take a snapshot of her ID badge. I would very much like to have her be my tour guide on my next visit to Madrid. She was knowledgable, friendly, and had a passion for her subject. Clearly, she knew a lot about many of the works in this museum. Next time, I take the 5 hour tour. There is just so much here that is fascinating. There were only a few drawbacks to this tour. 1) pictures in the Prado are not allowed. I picked up a guidebook on the way out. This is standard in pretty much every museum I visited in Madrid. 2) The description of the meeting location was not precise. There are three city information points that are next to the Prado. We had folks at all three and thus we started late. I was one of the late ones and felt really bad. The meeting point is at the City Information Point above the statue of Goya on Felipe Street. Even if you do not want a guided tour, pay for a “skip the line” ticket. There’s a booth in the median of the main road (Prado). The main entry line can get quite long during tourist season. Make sure you pick up a “plan” of the museum or you will be lost. Pay for the audio tour, you’ll get a handheld device that will tell you about the history of the artists and their works. This was so much worth my time, thank you!

Without question, the Prado is one of the world's greatest museums. What made my visit so much more was the tour guide. She was very knowledgeable, friendly, interesting and interested in making sure the tour (of 3, including me) a memorable experience.

Outstanding tour! I like art but wouldnt say Im not an art lover as such - didnt even know who Goya was until we went to Madrid, but I love history and this tour was fascinating. Our guide was simply brilliant in explaining everything. Seeing such old painting in superb condition blew my mind. This tour was one of the highlights of our visit. It would not have been the same if wed just wandered in by ourselves. Highly recommended.

This tour exceeded my expectations. We were fortunate to have an excellent guide who took us around to see a selection of paintings and explained the finer details of these.Although the tour was about an hour and a half it was worthwhile doing in such an enormous museum which could be overwhelming had we visited it independently. We had the opportunity to stay as long as we wanted after the tour but we we were satisfied with what we had seen.

the meeting point could have been more specifically defined- it sounded like an office but it is actually the stand were the hop on hop off tickets are sold in front of the Prado. I love art museums and was with my sister who doesn't have that much knowledge. She loved it because the guide showed us so many interesting things about the paintings that you wouldn't know without a guide. We were lucky as everyone spoke English in our group so we only had one language. After the tour you can stay on and spend as much time as you wish on your own. We were very happy we had a guide.

Great guide. Extremely knowledgeable and maintained a good pace. Upon completion, we were allowed to go on our own but she had covered the museum sufficiently for a typical tourist.

Worthwhile tour. Guide was excellent showed the most famous painting and explained what was signify the about them. Ive suggestion - it wouldve been helpful to identify the tour guide if she had a sign or a jacket indicating the tour groups name.
