All the guides were excellent. One in particular was truly outstanding - Makara in Phnom Penh.
His knowledge of the complex geopolitical history of Indochina combined with exceptional teaching skills allowed him to untangle for us the history of this region over the last century and a half. He is the match of any university professor and we were privileged to have him as our guide.
The tour itself couldn't have been better. It was the right pace, all the hotels were good, and the weather cooperated all the way. ”
Thank you On-The-Go, for an AMAZING experience in Vietnam. All the big activities and attractions included in my Very Vietnam tour were an absolute delight; beautifully organised, and dutifully executed with a seamless flow from one day to the next. I particularly enjoyed being on the Junk boat on Halong Bay, the Forbidden City in Hue, the Farm Tour in Hoi An as well as looking through the War Remnants Museum in Saigon. I was also extremely glad that I undertook the Cu Chi tunnels option as an extra; an amazing place. And, of course, nothing could ever beat the mouth-watering food that just kept coming, and coming.
While all the things that happened were fabulous, nothing could beat the exemplary genius, warmth, kindness, professionalism, wit, wisdom and heart-felt genuineness of our tour guide, Tran Tuan. Tuan was amazingly informative, and a lovely, lovely man. Obviously, the sights I saw were significant and mind-blowing, but knowing that Tuan was there to answer questions, have a joke with, and generally oversee all that was going on was, without question, the real highlight for me.
Thank you, and I look forward to travelling with you again.
Phu was enthusiastic, amiable, considerate, courteous and compassionate. He gave great insight into life in Vietnam and he was always eager to showcase his country in their history and their cuisine. He was always helpful to assist in anyway possible even taking me to the pharmacy and concerning with the pharmacist. Phu needs to win as a tour leader award! ”
Inspirations for a holiday in Vietnam
Travel off the beaten track and see parts of Vietnam that aren't on the usual tourist trail. Take a look at our six inspired things to do and places to see in Vietnam.
Hoa Lo Prison
Most famously used as a prison used by the North Vietnamese for the American PoWs during the Vietnam War as well as by the French in the colonial period. – the Hoa Lo Prison (known as the Hanoi Hilton) is now partially a museum. Take a walk around the old cells, read about what life was like here and see John McCain’s famous jump suit that he was wearing when he was shot down by the Viet Cong in 1967.
Hanoi's Water Puppets
A visit to Hanoi would not be complete without heading to the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre for the authentic Water Puppet performance. This traditional show originated in the countryside as a way to entertain the locals and has now travelled into the big cities and been performed in over 40 countries around the world!
Tra Que Vietnamese Cooking & Cycle
From Hoi An enjoy a bicycle ride through lush countryside to the village of Tra Que. Discover age-old farming practices and learn about traditional medicine. It’s a hands-on experience today with the opportunity to assist with tending the fields and gardens, and cooking lunch with a local family.
The DMZ and Vinh Moc tunnels
Those who are interested in the more recent history of Vietnam should head to the DMZ (Demilitarised Zone). Just north of Hue you can visit where the old border used to be. The nearby Vinh Moc tunnels are also a must see – unlike the Cu Chi tunnels in the south you can walk through them pretty much upright and they open out onto the South China Sea.
Mui Ne Beach Stay
Sit back and relax on one of Vietnam’s best beaches. This quaint fishing village has been welcoming visitors since 1990. Considered the adrenalin capital of Southern Vietnam – Mui Ne has a great surf from August to December. There are also spectacular red and white sand dunes which can be explored by dune buggy or jeep – or failing that you can just lol about on the beach and enjoy the stunning sunsets.
Sundowners at the Rex
Home to the ‘Five O’Clock Follies’ of the Vietnam War when the US military aired their press briefings from the rooftop bar of the Rex Hotel. The American military may be long gone – but the bar remains and it is the perfect place to grab a refreshing sun downer at the end of the day whilst watching the hub bub of the city below.
