Itinerary

Day 1

Hanoi

Saturday. Welcome to Hanoi, perhaps the most graceful, atmospheric and exotic capital city in Asia. Airport to hotel arrival transfer. The remainder of the day offers free time for you to explore the wide tree-lined avenues, beautiful lakes, ancient pagodas and the thriving historic old city, all easily navigated on foot.

For those able to arrive very early today or the day prior, why not get off the beaten track and explore Hanoi with us on our optional Back Streets of Hanoi add-on which explores the quaint districts of Cho Buoi, Hoang Hoa Tham and Vinh Phuc, and also includes an exhilarating local experience - riding pillion, on taxi-motorbikes through a maze of tiny streets and along the shore of beautiful Ho Tay Lake.
Overnight: Hanoi

Day 2

Junk boat cruising, Halong Bay

Hanoi – Halong Bay. After breakfast this morning we leave Hanoi and transfer to the crown in Vietnam's scenic crown - the incredibly beautiful Halong Bay. We'll explore the jade waters studded with karst islands aboard a traditional wooden junk boat and after embarkation there's time for lunch soaking up the views.

This afternoon we visit Trinh Nu Cave, one of the finest caves in Halong Bay, covering an area of 2,000m² with a stunning array of stalactites and stalagmites. There's also the opportunity to go kayaking and enjoy a refreshing swim. Later this evening back on board, watch a Vietnamese cooking demonstration held on the sundeck before settling down for a sumptuous seafood dinner.
Overnight: Halong Bay, Deluxe Junk Boat  |  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3

Floating villages and cyclo rides

Halong Bay - Hanoi - Hue. Early birds can start the day with a relaxing Tai Chi class on the sundeck or a traditional massage - the perfect way to start the day. Before heading back to port this morning, we explore the beautiful Sung Sot cave (Surprise Grotto), which is 10,000m² and consists of two major chambers which are spectacular and spacious enough to hold thousands of people.

Arriving back into Hanoi mid-afternoon we’ll explore the maze of streets in the French Quarter on cyclo (rickshaws), taking in highlights such as the Opera house and Ly Thai To park. We then swap our wheels for a leisurely walk through ‘36 streets of the old quarter’, named after the numerous guilds that once set up shop on a particular street from silk tailors to traditional medicine shops.

Later this evening there's a chance to freshen up before boarding the train (4 berth sleeper cabin, basic standard) on the ‘Reunification Express’ railway line to Hue. An option to fly from Hanoi to Hue is also available.
Overnight: Sleeper train  |  Breakfast

Day 4

Imperial Hue

Upon arrival to Hue we embark on a guided sightseeing tour of the 19th-century Nguyen empire capital. We visit the Thien Mu Pagoda, home to the oldest monastery in the city, whose 21m high tower has become something of a symbol for Hue and the citadel. Within the citadel is the Imperial Purple Palace, an exact copy of the Forbidden City in Beijing, with its impressive ramparts, formal moats and imperial palaces, some of which lay in ruin.

In the countryside lies the Royal Tombs of the Nguyen kings and here we’ll view the elaborate mausoleum of Emperor Tu Duc. As the sun sets there is an optional cruise in a long boat along the gentle Perfume River, beautifully illuminated at night.
Overnight: Hue  |  Breakfast, Lunch

Day 5

Delightful Hoi An

Hue - Road of the Ocean Clouds - Hoi An. Today we take the scenic Hai Van Pass (Road of the Ocean Clouds), which offers magnificent views of beaches to one side and lush hills to the other. En route we stop for a walk along My Khe beach, a beautiful stretch of coastline which was nicknamed 'China Beach' by the Americans during the war and famously featured in Francis Ford Coppola’s movie ‘Apocalypse Now’. Perhaps enjoy a refreshing swim in the sea before continuing our journey south along the coast to Hoi An.

The charming, old-world trading port of Hoi An with its cobbled streets, traditional homes and tiny shop houses is a perfect place to lose yourself in a bygone era. Boutique restaurants, hip cafes along the waterfront, delightful craft shops and artisans including some of Asia’s best bespoke tailors (whose services come at a nominal price), all can be found here.

On a short walking tour of the enchanting historical town, we’ll visit the Chua Ong Pagoda, Chinese Assembly Hall, 200-year-old Tam Ky house, former merchants’ homes and the 400 year-old Japanese Covered Bridge.

During your stay in Hoi An, we offer a unique optional Hoi An Street Eats add-on, which explores the city’s most popular local haunts. Cruise the city the way the locals do, by vintage Vespa and enjoy lots of tasty Vietnamese Cuisine. Book early with your reservation consultant, as numbers are limited.
Overnight: Hoi An  |  Breakfast

Day 6

Tra Que Village

A bicycle ride into the countryside leads us to Tra Que village. Here, we discover age old farming practices and learn about traditional medicine. It’s a hands-on experience today where we’ll assist with tending the fields and gardens and cooking lunch.
Overnight: Hoi An  |  Breakfast, Lunch

Day 7

Hoi An - at leisure

A free day for you relax or further sightsee. You may wish to take a relaxing rowboat journey along the river or spend the day lazing by the beach or hotel pool. It’s also possible to take an optional excursion to the holiest and most evocative of Vietnam’s Cham sites - My Son, or to Quang Ngai, the site of the My Lai massacre memorial. The massacre was a significant turning point in the Vietnam War and the story is told through photo presentation on a walk through the village.
Overnight: Hoi An  |  Breakfast

Day 8

Cruising the Mekong

Hoi An - Ho Chi Minh City. Early morning flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Drive to the Mekong Delta. Often referred to as the ‘rice bowl’ of Vietnam, the fertile Mekong Delta is famous for its abundant harvests of tropical fruits, flowers and rice, as well as its fantastic views while boating along the canals. Taking our sampan from Cai Be we'll cruise through the maze of waterways watching the hubbub of daily life on the river. Passing colourful trading boats, house boats and children swimming we stop to visit some of the local cottage industries that produce popcorn, coco candies and paper along the way. Lunch is served today in a traditional wooden home on Dong Hoa Hiep Island.
Overnight: Can Tho  |  Breakfast, Lunch

Day 9

Mekong & Ho Chi Minh City

Can Tho - Ho Chi Minh City. Early today we visit the ever lively Cai Rang floating market. Watch as melons, pineapples, fresh greens, sacks of rice and children's toys get tossed from one sampan to another at great heights and speed before driving back to Ho Chi Minh City. Once called the Pearl of the Orient, modern Ho Chi Minh City is a thriving metropolis on the move. Sleek sky scrapers, gourmet restaurants, designer malls and swanky bars and spas are scattered between ancient pagodas, colonial era landmarks and lively street markets. Our walking tour of Ho Chi Minh City includes visits to the Notre Dame Cathedral, Old Post office and the sombering War Remnants Museum. Evening at leisure.
Overnight: Ho Chi Minh City  |  Breakfast

Day 10

Ho Chi Minh City

Monday. Today is free for you to enjoy Ho Chi Minh City before your departure transfer to the airport. Opt for a relaxing foot massage, shop for souvenirs at Ben Thanh Market or visit the grand Independence Palace, with its secret bunker and military command centre beneath.

You could also extend your stay and join us on a day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels Here you can go underground to explore the vast network of tunnels and hideouts used by Viet Cong guerrilla fighters, see booby traps, trap doors or test your skill with an AK 47 at the firing range.
Breakfast

Cu Chi Tunnels - go underground!

Discover the Cu Chi Tunnels - a vast underground network of tunnels and hideouts used by Viet Cong guerrilla fighters during the 1960’s. Often lead by a relative of a Viet Cong fighter in green fatigues you’ll walk the bush trails discovering grass covered trapdoors, ingenious, yet gruesome booby traps and hidden underwater entrances in rivers. There is also an opportunity to go underground and pop off a few rounds at the firing range. Our Cu Chi Tunnels bolt-on includes return transportation to and from Cu Chi, guided tour and 1 night accommodation in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Very Vietnam tour exceeded our expectations. We were celebrating 21 years of marriage with a second honeymoon and unsure whether travelling with a group of people, we did not know, would be a positive experience. From the moment we met Tuan we felt we were with the right guide. He assured us that our other team members would become our "family" and we were in for an amazing 10 days. Tuan was very friendly, knowledgeable and inclusive. He shared his time equally between the group members and took an interest in each of us. He was aware I was a cooking teacher so he took time to explain specific details about the food and culture and arranged "hands on" experiences for me including booking a half day cooking school in Hoi Ann.

Tuan listened to the requests of the group and was intuitive of our needs. A quick detour to the beach on a very hot day or going to our hotel to shower and relax before heading out for an afternoon of sight seeing are just two examples of how he showed flexibility on our tour.

Long bus trips to places of interest were broken up with witty games, funny or informative stories shared by Tuan- the rubber tree yarn was his best so ask him about it!

We really liked the concept of using all modes of transport to see Vietnam on the tour. With the exception of the train ( an experience) each leg of the journey was enjoyable. Riding the bikes through the busy streets out to the countryside was great fun and Tuan was there making sure there were no collisions with motorbikes. The coaches were comfortable and we were always offered a bottle of cold water when we sat down. Cruising on the 5 star junk boat was an amazing experience and our "family" bonded with Tuan by enjoying the sunset and a cold drink on the upper deck.

The last day was bittersweet. By completing the tour we had a real sense of Vietnam- its people, culture and history. Saying goodbye to our "family" was hard- thank goodness for Facebook. We set up a private page to share our photos and experiences. Some of us are discussing going on another on the go tour together somewhere else in the world at a later date. Tuan was so passionate and knowledgeable about his country and had a very good handle of English and Australian culture. We would love him to win Tour Guide of the Year so he can just as warmly received by another culture.

Thankyou on the go and Tuan for an unforgettable experience!

Good afternoon Rachel,

I would like to thank you very much for the Very Vietnam tour that I have just returned home from ( I know you were concerned about my health before I started the tour) ,it was an experience to do a tour like that and learn so much about Vietnam, the people and their way of life.

Traveling North to South and stopping at the different provinces along the way is an experience I will never forget. The group I was with asked each other what was the part of the trip that stood out the most and nobody could choose one, the only thing that we all agreed on being THE BEST PART OF OUR TRIP WAS OUR GUIDE (TRAN BINH NGUYEN) I feel more so than the rest of the group as the help and consideration he gave to me cannot be explained in words. He explained everything to us as we toured and nothing was to much trouble. His knowledge and the explanation of all the places and sites we traveled to made it easier to understand about their customs, lives, culture and family. I really can't explain the experience I had and how much I enjoyed it. Will also be recommending your tours to all my friends that want to go overseas. Once again thanks for the experience of a life time.

Beautiful hotels and even the overnight sleeper train was okay. I'd heard some pretty bad reports, but I thought it was decent and good enough for one night.

The only downside was not enough time in each place. I would of preferred an extra night in Saigon rather than Can Tho, as there's more to see and do. In saying that, John made sure we saw and did as much as possible with the time we were given. The only real disappointment was the amount of time at the War Remnants Museum. Almost everyone I spoke to said they could have spent at least half a day there, in comparison to the hour and a bit we were given. Again, it was just John trying to make sure we saw as much as possible.

John was a fantastic tour guide, with a sense of humor and excellent knowledge of his country, His English was pretty much spot on which makes it easier and he would go out of his way for anyone. I needed a travel adapter after a few mishaps and he got one for me straight away, without asking. I really can't rate him highly enough!

Tour was absolutely amazing!! I don't think you can really see Vietnam unless you are on a tour. On the Go, and especially our guide, Ken, were so organised! We knew exactly what was happening each day!

Most of the hotels were lovely, especially the one in Hoi An, however a lot were definitely in need of a refurb. The hotel we freshened up in may need to be reconsidered. We were there for the sole purpose of having a shower, and the bathroom didn't even have a 'shower'. Just a shower head on the wall between the toilet and basin, no glass around it. The whole bathroom was wet after one person.

Our only suggestion for the tour would be to not do the Mekong markets twice. We feel like time could have been better used by going straight from the airport to the war museum, and then notre dame and the post office. You could then drive down to Can Tho in the evening and stay as planned. The next morning you could do the markets when there is lots of action and then do the group lunch before heading back to SGN in the evening!

Ken was absolutely amazing! No words can describe how helpful he was. This tour would not have been the same without him!! 5* for him!

I thought the days spent in Hanoi and Halong Bay could have been longer. A sweater is a must for Halong during daytime during travels in Jan and Feb.

RE Train: Although our berths were not bad at all, please remind us to bring toilet papers on the overnight trains and around Vietnam in general (or just in case... ) as some of the sites offer restrooms, but no toilet paper. Other than that, I thought it was perfect. I wish there was a day that could have been spent on the beach

Do I receive any discounted offer for influencing friends to tour with On The Go and/or being a frequent flyer ?

Our tour guide was perfect, very knowledgeable on Vietnam's history. I would use On The Go Again.

Just wanted to say thanks for a great tour. My partner and I had a great time and would never have seen as much if we had gone on our own. Our tour guide Son was great. He was very informative, and related well to everyone on the tour no matter what their special needs were. Everything was well organised and flowed really well.

About the only negatives I have were on the last day in Ho Chi Min the final afternoon of the tour would have been nice if it had been free time after a hectic last couple of days. I got the feeling that no one in our group really enjoyed the war museum or post office/notre dame buildings. The hotel in Can Tho left a bit to be desired also compared to the other hotels we had on the tour (including the worst breakfast).

As a whole we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the experiences we got to have and that was all helped by Son who was great.

Thanks again.

Faultless tour with a fantastic guide.

The tour was well paced with a good number of activities and enough time to relax. I have seen all of the highlights of Vietnam. Hung was an insightful, friendly, knowledgeable, organised guide who made the trip as great as it was. He helped us with any problems or queries and thought of all the little things: like calling ahead to ask hotels to turn the air conditioning on, making sure we had enough water and recommending good places to eat.
