Amritsar & Shimla

6 days  |  from  $1,795

Bringing together the highlights of holy Amritsar and scenic Shimla, this 6 day add-on is the ideal addition to a group tour or private holiday.

Leaving Delhi for the holy city of Amritsar we see the stunning Golden Sikh Temple of Amritsar before taking our places to watch the pomp performed at the Wagah Border for the daily lowering of the flags. From Kalka we ride the narrow gauge Himalayan Queen to Kandaghat before continuing to Shimla to explore the former British hill station nestled within magnificent mountain scenery. In both Amristar and Shimla there are guided sightseeing tours to the must-see sights as well as plenty of time to enjoy independent exploration.

Day 1: Amritsar - Monday
Included airport arrival transfer. This afternoon you’ll be transferred from our hotel (day rooms can be arranged if required) in Delhi to the railway station to catch the Amritsar Shatabdi Express train (departing at 16:30) to Amritsar. The spiritual home of the Sikh religion, with the Golden Temples as its centre piece, Amritsar is friendly, relaxed and vibrant. Meaning ‘Pool of the Nectar of Immortality’, Amritsar attracts thousands of pilgrims each year bringing together people from all faiths and religions, all congregating together in one of India’s friendliest cities. Arriving late this evening (approx. 22:30) you'll check into your hotel for your two night stay.

Day 2: Amritsar sightseeing with the Golden Temple - Tuesday
After a good nights rest and a leisurely breakfast we'll head out for half a day tour of the city including a visit to the magnificent Golden Temple. Despite the number of people who come to visit the scared shrine, gilded with a staggering 100kg of gold, the atmosphere here is peaceful and tranquil. While the Golden Temple is the focal point, sitting at the end of the walkway with the top glimmering in the sun and reflected in the surrounding pool of water, there are many other shrines and monuments to explore. As sunset approaches we travel to Wagah, a village situated at the border crossing between Pakistan and India. Watch as the colourful and highly animated changing of guard and flag-lowering ceremony takes places at sunset at the Wagah Border signifying the closing of the border for the day.

Day 3: Chandigarh - Wednesday
In the morning leave behind Amritsar for Chandigarh, arriving for an afternoon of guided sightseeing. Chandigarh is the definition of modern India, a well planned city designed by the French architect Le Corbusier. It is a perfect example of urban development full of boulevards, gardens, lakes and parks. In the afternoon visit the Rose Garden, home to over 1,500 varieties of rose, walk along Sukhna Lake stopping in the nearby ornamental gardens, and explore the Rock Garden. A completely unique and innovative creation, the Rock Garden is a collection of over 2,000 sculptures created over 20 years from a collection of concrete, steel drums, old bicycle frames and broken sinks.

Day 4: Kalka to Shimla - Thursday
Drive to Kalka station to board the narrow gauge Himalayan Queen Toy Train bound for Kandaghat. Along the 57 kilometres, winding through numerous curves and passing across level crossings, you will be able to look out the window and see every day Indian life pass you by. Watch as you travel north up to the foothills of the Himalayas, past hills, valleys and snow-capped peaks. Arriving at Kadaghat you'll be met by our representative and continue your journey to Shimla by road.

Day 5: Shimla sightseeing - Friday
The previous British hill station and former capital of the Raj, Shimla is not only picturesque but historic with many stories to tell. Spend the morning on a guided sightseeing tour of the settlement, walking the narrow streets full of colourful bazaars and markets, all against the stunning backdrop of snow-capped peaks. The afternoon is yours to explore the city independently.

Day 6: Kalka to Delhi - Saturday
Today is your last chance to further explore Shimla. Opt to drop by the colourful Lakkar Bazaar or hike to the summit of Jakhoo Hill, Shimla’s highest point. Alternatively take this opportunity to simply relax in your beautiful surroundings before checking out of your hotel and boarding the Kalka Shatabdi Express (departing at 17:45) back to Delhi. Upon arrival to Delhi (at approx. 21:55) you will be transferred to the hotel that your group tour will commence, ready to start your next adventure.
