Stop At: Piha Beach, Piha, Auckland New Zealand

Blacksand guides grew up surfing at Piha and know every inch of the coastline better than anyone. They know the hidden locations, how to get to the hidden locations, when it is safe to go to the hidden locations (it isn't always) and how to have the most fun when you are there. If you want to really want the full Piha experience, travel with us...

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Kitekite Falls, Piha, Auckland New Zealand

Blacksand Adventures will take you hiking for 30 minutes through a beautiful rain-forest, and then swimming underneath a 140 foot waterfall...

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Whatipu Beach, Auckland Central, Auckland New Zealand

Blacksand Adventures will take you on a full exploration of some of the regions of Whatipu Beach. On hot days we swim the safer bays. On cooler days, we explore the cave systems. Sometimes we hike the trails and climb the dunes.

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Anawhata Road, Auckland New Zealand

We hike down to the quiet river, explore the rock pools. If conditions permit we take the windy path to Keyhole rock. We scramble some of the rock formations on the coast.

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Lake Wainamu, Bethells Road, Waitakere City, Auckland New Zealand

We hike the massive sand dunes, swim in the beautiful lake. Leap from tree branches into the warm deep water, and roll down the steep sand dunes... If conditions are good, we hunt for quicksand to play in. It is quite safe :)

Shaun is passionate about the outdoors and very knowledgeable about New Zealand. The hikes covered some spectacular scenery and provided a quiet retreat from the bustle of Auckland. We had a great time!

To describe Black Sand Tours is to simply say they are the best. Top notch all the way around and a must if you are staying in the Auckland area. Shaun the tour guide is amazing and will take you to some of the most beautiful places. We went to Piha beach and to Bethel. Both beautiful places and made for an awesome adventure. This was booked last minute and wound up being the highlight of my two weeks in New Zealand. I will book again when I return. A

After a couple of days in Auckland I was looking for something different and this was it! We left the city and headed to Peha Beach and then Shaun guided us up and over a hill so yes there is some hiking involved, wear good shoes/sandals to this little cove that we had to ourselves! The rough seas were broken by a string of rocks at the entrance to the cove so it was perfect for swimming! It was awesome to swim in this cove. After a bit, we hiked a bit farther to have a picnic lunch Shaun stops at a little village so you can buy your own picnic lunch on the edge of a cliff with spectacular views of the ocean crashing into the cliffs. Afterwards, we went to KiteKite Falls another short 20 min hike, so we could swim in the waterfall. Which was pretty amazing. Black Sands Tours and Shaun did a great trip. Would highly recommend for a little adventure outside of Auckland.

Shaun went to GREAT LENGTHS to accommodate a rebooking situation. He was very informative and excellent Ambassador for NZ and his Business. He also adjusted the itinerary for his Clients. A walking encyclopedia on the Kiwi West Coast!

This was a fantastic trip that far exceeded my expectations. The guide was incredible courteous and helpful with a great attitude. He lead us to some amazing spots that looked like places straight off the best postcards you could ever find. I enjoyed the day so much I would consider doing this again despite the fact that there are so many other places to see. This trip is well worth it and you won't be disappointed. I highly recommend this trip and this operator as well. Marc from Hong Kong/USA

Such a great last day in Auckland. We had a good tour guide and we stopped to get some meat pies that were so good. Piha beach was amazing but the hiking to the top was rough but the views were so worth it

Let me just start by saying if you want to see Auckland in all its GLORY, book this tour with Black Sands. Shaun the CEO made this tour unforgettable and my absolute favorite part of my whole trip in Auckland. My only regret is I didn't have additional days to book another tour with him.

This is one of those trips where you made friends instead of feeling like you are in a standard commercialized tour. Shaun is a amazing guide and friend, a true local that have the required knowledge and safety awareness for his tour participants. The tour has a high level of customization, you get in the car and Shaun will tell you about the weather, the tide, the wind etc and how to make the most of the day. He took us to the ugliest place for lunch and it was spectacular. Shaun also took us to all these little spots only a true local knows, there were plenty of people at Piha and yet the places we went to we only saw a few people. It really does feel like a fun adventure day with a friend more than anything. I would highly recommend travelers with a moderately fitness level to go with this tour company, you will get the chance to push your limits safely. p.s. Shaun's got the best stories, there wasn't a moment of boredom throughout the trip! :

A great adventure trip to the West coast of Auckland. It was a small group which allows for a very special personal touch. We felt like we were getting an exclusive experience to an area most tourists aren't well aware of. Well worth it if you're in Auckland.

I really enjoyed my day and got a good tailored look around the West Coast beaches. Shaun is a great guy and knew his stuff and it was a pleasure to hang out with him and see the non city bit of Auckland.

Must do. I was lucky to have a private tour and I loved it. Everything was beautiful and just what I wanted to see. Great half day tour

If you are young, adventerous, and not afraid to get sandy and wet, this is the best tour you can do. The guide, Shaun, was the best tour guide I have ever had. He was extremely friendly, interactive, organized, and energetic. It literally feels like you are exploring the hidden gems of the west coast with your best friend, except your best friend has the appropriate knowledge of the area. Because of Shaun's expertise we were able to see parts of the coastline that were completely untouched. We spent our whole day by ourselves which is crazy to think since we were only 45 minutes from downtown Auckland. This tour was everything we could have asked for and then some. I highly recommend for anyone who is interested in climbing rocks, swimming, and rolling down black sand dunes. For those of you with any safety concerns, Shaun is very observant and attentive to his guests needs and skill levels. He continually ensured we felt safe and always aired on the side of caution. Before we started he also went through a check list of rules, guidelines, and safety procedures. I cannot speak highly enough of this tour. Wish we could go back and do it again.

This trip was amazing! My fiance and I booked last minute 10pm the night before not really knowing what to expect. The owner got back to us immediately to ask about a pick up location at 10pm! He's super dedicated. We had a blast hiking around, walking some black sand beaches and getting to know some other international travelers on the small 6-person tour. Shaun, the owner of Black Sand Tours, was a wonderful guide. A local to the Auckland area, he has a very intimate knowledge of the beaches and hiking locations he took us to. He inquired about hiking/swimming skill levels to ensure everyone would have a good time his knowledge of wind/tidal/weather safety conditions made us all feel very safe. He knows what he's doing. Despite the rainy/windy weather, we all had a wonderful time exploring Piha and Muriwai. The locations he took us to were absolutely gorgeous, even in the mist. We saw nesting nesting Gannets at Muriwai it was like a scene straight out of Planet Earth and hiked to a little black sand cove at Piha we got an amazing view of Lion Rock on the way there. Shaun offers a unique experience for everyone on the tour and truly puts a ton of effort into making sure everyone has a good time. As I said, having small group made it easy to meet and talk to people including Shaun if he wasn't telling us about some interesting local history , he was engaging us in some interesting conversations or giving us recommendations for other Auckland trips. Overall, this tour was excellent! I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone in Auckland looking for something to do. Its a great way to get out of the city which is what my fiance and I were looking to do, and to see some of the famous New Zealand countryside. Its great for most age groups too, given that Shaun gauges the group. Definitely add a Black Sand Tour to your Auckland itinerary!

Sean from Black Sand Tours was an amazing guide and by the end a friend. His knowledge of the Auckland area, beaches, and ocean tides/conditions were unmatched and helped make our trip that much better. Based on conditions he chose Piha and Anawhata Beach which were both breath taking. Overall, I really enjoyed the tour, Sean's chill attitude and knowledge of Auckland/surrounding areas. Undoubtedly the best day and money spent in Auckland and hopefully will run into Sean again.

Shaun did an excellent job in giving us a fabulous experience seeing the black sand areas of Auckland. He has extensive knowledge of the area and its history. He is a very adventurous fellow that likes to give the participant experiences that are interesting and fun. However, he always ensures that his participants feel comfortable with any of the activities. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would highly recommend Shaun if you'd like to see the Black Sands area ...Thanks Shaun

This was my wife's favorite tour. Sean from Black Sands Tours is the owner and he drove us around. It was only a small group 5 in our party plus 2 that had booked it the night before. For those that have cruised in the Caribbean, this is not your typical beach tour where they drive you to a beach and you just lay out for 5 hours. This involved some walking and climbing over uneven terrain so it may be best to not only wear or bring flip flops, but maybe also have a pair of water shoes. We went to 2 beaches that day and if our party didn't have to be back at port by 5pm for the cruise ship, we probably would have stayed at the 2nd beach for much longer. Sean doesn't have a set itinerary. If the weather that day favors one beach or another, he'll plan the day accordingly and really try to maximize the amount of time and sights he can show you. The first beach we went to was Whatipu and the black sand there was so beautiful and so fine that when you get back to the van, you don't need to brush it off your feet b/c it just naturally falls off. We went there b/c that beach is normally calm and great for swimming but that day, it was extremely rough with many rip tides. A few of us still went in the water about 62 degrees Fahrenheit b/c when's the next time you're gonna be in New Zealand at the beach? Then we had lunch on the beach and we all ate sandwiches or snacks we had picked up in town before making the drive. Just a heads up that most of the road on the way to Whatipu is not paved and can be very bumpy at times so for those that get carsick easily, sit at the front of the van. Sean told us that it's like this b/c the local council is very weary about having the roads paved to these secluded beaches and commercializing these spots. The 2nd beach we went to was Piha, which seemed to be a local favorite. We walked and climbed to various points around the beach to see some really amazing sights and views. Sean did a great job showing us all of the amazing sights in the time we were there. I would definitely recommend using Sean and his company. He took pictures on his phone and on any device that we requested and the best part is that once you friend him on Facebook or Instagram, he'll send you a link for all the photos he took that day and WILL NOT charge you for them! This combined with the fact that he truly just wants every person to take in and enjoy these parts of Auckland is what made this tour worthwhile.

The Trip was AMAZING, we loved every minute. Black Sand Tours is the best, they look after everyone and make sure that you are loving it. The trip adapts depending on your level of adventure. If you wish to have extreme adventure or only a cool time in the West this is the trip for you. There are 14 beaches in the West and Black Sand Tours know all of them by heart, the guides are fun and love what they do. This is a must do in Auckland, if you are visiting the west make sure you do it with them! If I could I would give them more than 5 stars. Recomend it to everyone, I can guarantee independent of your age or adventure level from extreme adventurer to non aretedventurer at all, you will love it! Choose Black Sand Tours and you wont be dissapointed!

This tour is really a choose-your-own-adventure type of day. Shaun custom tailors the activities to whatever the group wants. He can go as extreme as cliff diving to as tame as swimming at the black sand beaches. Truly fun day. It was a very unique tour where we felt like we enjoyed the beaches like locals and were shown the cool, unique parts that aren't in the tour books.

This was an amazing experience! Shaun the owner of Black Sand tours was surprised to see a group including kids ages 7 and 9 but was unfazed and gave us an amazing tour of Bethells and Piha beaches. He customized it so it was appropriate, fun and most importantly exciting for the adults and kids. It started with a river walk at Bethells beach along with climbing and playing in the sand dunes and ended hiking on the cliffs at Piha beach which seemed very adventurous and fun to the kids! Perfect day overall and the highlight of our families 3 week trip!

Best trip we took of many while in New Zealand. Sean Walters met us at our hotel, and while he might have been surprised to find 2 60 year old customers, gave us a great adventure tailored to our abilities. We saw 2 amazing beaches, climbed around in places we wouldn't have thought to do without Sean's expertise. We have no doubt he'd make it equally fun for all ages of customers, and would give you a memorable time. The conversation while driving to locations was equally memorable, Sean is just a great guy, fun to be around, very good conversationalist as well. From the moment we stepped into his car until the moment we left it, just so much fun.
