Stop At: Tamaki Maori Village, 1220 Hinemaru St, Rotorua 3010 New Zealand

Your journey through time unfolds when your coach travels to a pre-European village set deep within the forest, 15 minutes from Rotorua. Let this 3.5-hour tour and your imagination take over as your guide instructs you on the protocol for visiting the marae. A chief is selected, a song is learnt and the eerie cry of the welcome is heard before you enter the world of the proud warriors of the ancient Maori.

You will experience the powhiri (welcome ceremony) before you enter the village, with crackling open fires in front of traditional whare (houses). You'll hear traditional Maori instruments and watch the daily activities of days gone by. In the wharenui (meeting house), a Rangiatea culture group offers a powerful display of haka song and dance. Then, as new friendships are forged, dine on a traditional hangi feast, where the food is cooked slowly beneath the ground in earth ovens.

This is an amazing re-enactment based on actual events from history, with real characters, traditional arts and crafts, powerful song and dance while enjoying an authentic Hangi feast.

The whole experience from free shuttle pickup to the welcoming ceremony, cultural demos, dance and dinner was excellent - punctual, engaging yet casual. The staff, host and village people were friendly and helpful. The dessert was delicious. And the driver for our shuttle bus, Denise, was very entertaining from the ride to the Maori village and back.

We loved this excursion! We learned so much about the Maori people and had a great time watching their show and eating their delicious Hangi dinner. We also loved the fact that it was interactive. We got to play some of the games they played and our husbands got to learn the Haka! This is a must when visiting Rotorua!

From being picked up at the hotel to the final drop off the whole experience was faultless. Our bus driver along with ever other member of this amazing experience certainly kept us all entertained getting everyone involved. The knowledge and learnings of these beautiful Maori people was fantastic along with the hungi feast that was enjoyed by all.

There were probably around 250 people joined this activity at the same time. And was too much crowded around the Hāngi and inside the Wharenui. But I did enjoy interact with the local Māori at the village and the food was overflowing.

A really fun and informative event. Our driver to and from the dinner was extremely amusing and gave us some insight to the Maori culture. Once at the Maori site, we learnt a lot more about the customs and history of the Maori people. The dinner was very good and I would recommend this tour.

This is a very cultural display of the Maori people and their village. After a welcoming from the chief and other warriors we were shown around the village. At each stop one of the Maori people would explain and demonstrate a cultural aspect of their upbringing. E.g dancing, tattoos, games and traditional attire. This was followed by a lovely performance and a delicious hangi dinner. A must when visiting NZ.

This was a really exciting adventure right from the very start when we were collected at our hotel and transported to the forest village by air conditioned coach and a driver who gave a good briefing about the place in a hilarious way. Organisation of the four tribes which arrived in buses was done very efficiently. Meaningful outline of Maori history and culture, and delicious, voluminous and relaxing hangi. Highly recommended. When booking I thought it was a bit on the expensive side, but it was worth it all. A must for anyone coming to Rotorua.

Great way to immerse yourself in Maori culture and traditions. Friendly, informative, fun and a great meal traditionally cooked. A must for the Rotorua visitor. The hotels in Rotorua do a version of this, but we wanted to do this one and were not disappointed.

We really enjoyed being exposed to Maori culture and tradition through the Tamaki village Hangi dinner and performance. The experience starts out with the chiefs of each 'tribe' i.e. bus gaining acceptance into the Maori village through a traditional imitation dance which was our favorite. We had encountered this briefly at our time at Te Puia, but the experience was all the more mesmerizing in the village setting. The food was plentiful and buffet style so offered many options to guests, including my pregnant self. We had originally booked the 5:30 pm tour as the later tours were sold out, but was able to change to a later time on the day of the reservation at no extra cost. I highly recommend this tour for a glimpse at the history and culture of the Maori people. It is an experience that should not be missed. The entire experience took 3 hours.

Muito bom, mas o local onde os Maori viviam é fabricada, não é original, mas dá para imaginar como seria a original. Jantar bom.
