Stop At: SoBou Restaurant, 310 Chartres St, New Orleans, LA 70130, USA

Meet your guide in the French Quarter in the afternoon and begin your food tour of New Orleans at SoBou, one of two restaurants owned by the award-winning Commander’s Palace family. Sit down and relax as you are treated to three street food-inspired dishes that showcase modern New Orleans cuisine: fried pork skins, boudin balls with Creole mustard, and a seasonal Beignet.

Listen to a narrative history of Louisiana cuisine, starting with the culinary contributions of local American Indian tribes and leading to the arrival of the Europeans and West Africans who created its Creole flavors. You’ll hear about the unique geography of southern Louisiana, as well as the linguistic origins of dozens of local dishes, from beignets and étouffée to gumbo and jambalaya.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Pepper Palace, 224 Chartres St 1 French Market Place, New Orleans, LA 70130-2290

If you’d like, purchase a drink at the full bar before moving on to a stop at the Pepper Palace Hot Sauce Bar, where you can sample dozens of different hot sauces, BBQ sauces, dry rubs, seasonings and more while learning about the spicy, Cajun-style cuisine of rural Louisiana.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Leah's Pralines, 714 St Louis St, New Orleans, LA 70130, USA

Third stop is Leah’s Pralines, a candy shop established in 1933. After learning its history, taste a Creole praline and sample the bacon pecan brittle.

Duration: 30 minutes

Pass By: Royal Street, New Orleans, LA 70130

Take in the sites and sounds of festive Royal Street as we move on to our next stop.

Pass By: Bourbon Street, New Orleans, LA

Pass briefly along New Orleans' most famous street on our way to NOLA Poboys.

Stop At: NOLA Poboys, 908 Bourbon St, New Orleans, LA 70116, USA

Next, bite into two New Orleans inventions: the muffuletta and the po-boy. Both are served at the funky dive NOLA Po-boys, a local joint with an immense menu. Discuss the 19th and 20th century history of the New Orleans' immigrants as you sample the fried catfish poboy on freshly baked New Orleans–style French bread before moving on to the slightly warmed muffuletta: an Italian-style sandwich of ham, salami, mortadella, provolone cheese, mozzarella cheese and New Orleans-style olive salad.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Tujague's, 823 Decatur St, New Orleans, LA 70116, USA

The next stop is Tujague’s, the second-oldest restaurant in New Orleans, serving up classic Creole cuisine since 1856. Discover the culinary contributions of the butchers of the French Market while you dig into one delicious dish: the Bavarian-style slow-cooked beef brisket.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Jackson Square, 615 Pere Antoine Alley, New Orleans, LA 70116-3234

Your final stop is either Dickie Brennan's Tableau where you will enjoy a savory Seafood Gumbo, or the Creole Cookery for a Chicken & Andouille Sausage Gumbo. Both venues are locally owned and operated, and are great examples of classic Creole restaurants.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: French Quarter, New Orleans, LA

The walking tour covers about one and a half miles (2.4 km) throughout the French Quarter, at a leisurely pace.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Michael. He was a knowledgeable and entertaining guide who kept the tour running smoothly. We left the tour full and happy.

Definitely worth it! Lindsey was one of the best guides we've ever had on a tour like this. Good amount of history and background without being a dry history lesson. She knows the area and the food. The food and restaurants on the tour are well worth it.

The first bit was a little rocky as the samples were small (spicy sauce and some pralines), but then we got on to the real stuff. I liked the mix of hole-in-the-wall and elegant stops, and the food was always authentic. Mark did a great job discussing the history of each food in a well rounded way. Be warned though- every member of the group felt like they needed a nap after all the food and walking!

There are a lot of food tours in New Orleans, but I do believe this one is the absolute best! We visited 6 locations and sampled 10 foods. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the city as well as the restaurants and origin of the foods we tried. He was very personable and entertaining and a true professional. We started the tour at 1pm and by the end of the tour and all of our tastings, we knew we did not need to make dinner plans! You will really enjoy the afternoon on this tour and will enjoy most (perhaps all!) of the food!

My husband and I loved this tour! Make sure you show up hungry, because they give you a ton of food to try. Ben, our guide, was awesome! He was a perfect mix of history, hospitality, and humor. I would 100% recommend this tour to others.

Mark our guide was such a historian on the city and cuisine. He made the tour much more than expected. I enjoyed the food and history behind the entrees. After this tour a lite dinner is recommended.

We LOVED this tour. We went as part of our mini-moon, and this was not our first visit to New Orleans. We are so glad we did this tour and we have recommended it to many of our friends and family. Our tour guide, Lindsay, was incredibly knowledgeable about New Orleans and the food. We learned so much from her, and we tasted so many delicious types of food. Highly, highly recommend! Also, we hope you get Lindsay as your tour guide- she's the best!

Kudos to Dr. Gumbo for not dumbing down the tour and providing solid historical, culinary and local customs facts, factoids and antidotes to this tour. Too often guides go for the yucks and quick laughs and don't take the message seriously. There are blatant commercial efforts to buy a drink or a discussed goodie, but no pressure. I even spent a few extra bucks - it's vacation in a great place with a well spend couple of hours. From Po Boys to Boudin with foie gras dipping sauce it was an experience!

This was a great tour. Our tour guide, Michael, was very entertaining and knowledgeable. Food was really good and even returned to one place for dinner that night.

Magic Mike was our guide, and he was fantastic. Very interesting history mixed with the right amount of humor, and the food samplings were fantastic.

I was the only person on my tour so I was glad that they didn’t cancel it. My guide, Ben, told me that they don’t cancel yours even if it is just one person. That was nice. The tour was super fun. Ben was a great guide and seemed to know everyone. He was very knowledgeable about the food and history and was a fun guy to hang out with for the afternoon.

Excellent tour. We walked around the Quarter and sampled food at maybe 7 places. Crawfish beignet, crackle, brisket, pralines, gumbo, po-boy, muffuletta, and hot sauces. We were too full for dinner! Not super good for physically challenged due to poor quality of sidewalks. Lots of historical tidbits to go with the food.

Dr. Gumbo (Dylan) did an amazing job sharing with us not only the history of New Orleans but also the origins of some of NOLA’s iconic foods. His humor, background knowledge, and personality really made our tour enjoyable, and we will book another tour with him on our next visit to New Orleans. Thank you for a great experience!

Lindsey, the guide, was truly amazing! She knew all the history of NOLA cuisine and its founding cultures. She has an adorable sense of humor....be sure she is your guide! All restaurants were interesting - Tu Jaques, Leah's Pralines and Pepper Palace the most interesting and best 'tastes'...Can't say enough about this experience - so worth the money!

We did the tour with Tiffany and she ROCKS! Great sampling and she gave excellent historical connections from the city’s immigrant influences. We are motivated to go home and try to make some gumbo for sure.

Lindsay was outstanding. She had great knowledge of the history of Ne Orleans and mixed it with good humor and trivia. Highly recommend this tour as a preamble for any stay.

This was by far the best tour we've taken in New Orleans, and we've taken several. Our tour guide, Ben, was incredibly knowledgeable on the history, the culture and the cuisine(s) of NOLA. We learned so much from him! The stops on the tour were very interesting as well, and the food "samples" excellent. I say "samples" because by the time the tour was over, we were too stuffed to even think about dinner. Our stops were Sobu, The Pepper Palace, Laura's Pralines (be sure to try the bacon and pecan brittle), NOLA Po Boys, Tujague's, and Tableau. This $70 was worth every cent. I highly recommend it. If you take one tour in NOLA, take this French Quarter Food and History one.

What a great tour! Not only were the stops awesome and the food delicious, but Lindsey, our tour guide, was the best. She was funny, highly informative and really made our day great. I would highly recommend this company for another tour!
