Visit: Edinburgh Castle, Castlehill, Edinburgh EH1 2NG Scotland

Head straight inside Edinburgh Castle to discover the delights of the city’s magnificent fortress, believed to date back as far as the Iron Age. Dominating Castle Rock, the castle’s prominent position meant that it quickly became an important stronghold, and countless bloody battles and sieges were fought over it.

As you walk around independently, read up on some of the more notable battles that Edinburgh Castle witnessed, such as the War of Independence between the Scots and the English in the 14th century. The castle was recaptured from the English in a daring raid under the cover of darkness by the nephew of the great Scot, Robert the Bruce.

Where you go inside the castle is up to you, but be sure to visit the beautifully decorated Royal Palace to see where Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to her son. The Scottish Crown Jewels are also found in this part of the castle, along with the intriguing Stone of Destiny — a weathered rock upon which the early Scottish kings were enthroned. Take a walk through Crown Square to see the Great Hall of James IV, explore the prisons that held French and American prisoners during the War of Independence, and pass through St Margaret’s Chapel.

Use your ticket to enter the on-site National War Museum, where you can browse a staggering collection of artifacts that document some 400 years of Scottish military history. Highlights include a display of Highland swords and the 19th-century Thin Red Line painting by the acclaimed Scottish artist Robert Gibb.

You can spend as long as you want inside the castle, however many visitors find 2–3 hours to be ample. If you want to take a break from sightseeing, visit the Tea Rooms for traditional tea and baked snacks or the self-service Redcoat Café to eat and admire the views. Both are located on the castle grounds. All food and drinks are at your own expense.

Worth the visit, but be advised that there is a good deal of strenuous up hill walking. The castle has many aspects and levels. Stairs are old cobblestone as well as the streets. It is a stunning view from the top. A major attraction in Edinburgh...please allow a few hours to do it properly.

We spent a lot of time in the castle - loved every minute, well worth the money. We paid online and it was a couple of quid cheaper - worth doing if you know when you want to go. We went first thing, and we were glad cos it went really busy in the afternoon.

Amazing castle! Views from castle are breathtaking. Definitely preorder your tickets ahead of time. We had the slot for 9:30 to 11:00 am to check in. We were there for opening 9:30. We got there 9:10am line was already forming even with preorder tickets. Once you get thru the gates and hand your tickets in bare to your left and go up Lang stairs. This leads you to the Crown Jewels -it is not a big room. It was not crowded at all because most visitors go straight to see the view. Then continue on your tour. We didn't take a audio and we were fine. If you like high tea you must do it at The Tea Room. It was excellent! It is located in the Crown Square. Tom and Mary USA

What made this trip special was our tour guide David Ross. If you can book with him-go for it. First of all he came in a kilt!! On time and told us history and stories the entire day. Fantastic!! Of course the Castle and town were wonderful to visit. Wish we could have spent more time there. Celebrity Cruise line changed our itinerary and we only had one day instead of two. Wish we were not there during their Festival. It was very crowded in the city. Would love to return and meet up with Mr Ross again to show us more of his beautiful country. He was a great driver and had snacks and drinks for our trip. Thinks of it all!! Perfect day!~~

This is a must see in Edinburgh. We had skipped the line tickets through Viator and we did just that going right through security and handing in our tickets. There are free guided tours in the Castle and you can rent head sets which are totally worth the money

We went to the Edinburgh Castle and the lines were long at the ticket booth. We were glad we had pre-purchased our tickets and were able to get in quickly. The castle and grounds are beautiful. There is much to see. Inside there are restaurants and gift shops. Audio tours in all languages are available for purchase. We enjoyed our time there. Highly recommend seeing the Edinburgh Castle.

What an awesome and amazing time my husband and I had visiting the Edinburgh Castle! We had the best time, the tour was so great, we learned so much about this beautiful piece of history. I was truly amazed about all the history that you felt walking into those rooms and hall. It was a wonderful experience.

Well worth the time to go and see. The old doors from the dungeons will overwhelm you. Such a beautiful view as well.

Very picturesque. A lot of history here. Great views of the city and surrounding areas. Worth the time and money.

This was a completely no hassle way to see the castle. The castle itself is a must-do in my opinion and buying a ticket this way just makes sense.

My daughter and I traveled to United Kingdom and Europe for three weeks spending three nights in each city of the five destinations. This was my daughter's first trip abroad. I lived in Edinburgh 20 years before, but had not been back since. I hoped to show her as much as we could get in during our short time there. We booked this tour on the day we arrived. Richard met us right on time! The walking part of our tour was set at a reasonable pace. We saw and had time for photos at so many of the sights we hoped to see during our tour. Including the little shop where Harry Potter was written, Greyfriers Bobby and Grassmarket area. THIS WAS THE BEST TOUR! Richard knew and shared SO MUCH history. His entertaining stories were told with humor and knowledge with out being preformed in a theatrical way or silly costume like so many of the tours are. The base of knowledge Richard gave us set the tone for our time in this beautiful city. Everything we experienced after the tour we were able to relate back to a story Richard shared especially when we toured the Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile and Holyrood Palace and Abby. He was a great source of information sharing what we might want to see that I didn't have on my list already and restaurant recommendations.Edinburgh is a very walk-able city and public transport is super easy. The buses do not give change back so be sure you have the correct coins. Other recommendations I would share from our time here: Mary's Milk bar in Grassmarket Great Ice cream, milkshakes or hot chocolate, the BEST breakfast we enjoyed was at Southern Cross Cafe organic, vegetarian, gluten free options, however, the eggs Benedict is to die for! and finally for dinner we enjoyed a lovely Scottish meal at the Rosehip on Rose Street. I can't wait to go back to this beautiful place and spend more time. THANK YOU Richard for sharing you city and a plethora of your knowledge with us making helping to make our trip to Edinburgh SO FABULOUS!

Purchasing the entrance ticket through Viator did save some time at the site. You still need to go to the office to obtain the entry ticket but this line was much smaller that the one to purchase tickets on the day.
• Submitted 06 Apr 2018
Easy to purchase entrance ticket once we found out where we should go at entrance to the castle
• Submitted 25 Mar 2018
Beautiful castle in a good location. There are several rooms to see inside the castle and you have an amazing view of Edinburgh from the highest point of the castle. A must see place when you go to this capital city.
