Giving something back

Working in travel can be a double edged sword sometimes – the effect of tourism on places can be good in terms of the money coming in to the area but can also change the areas we travel to, not always in a good way (places like Malaga and Benidorm have changed dramatically through tourism from the sleepy beach towns they were).

on the go believes in giving something back to the communities we visit and in South Africa we support The Tourism Community Development Trust, whose objective is to make a difference at grass-roots level.

In the past year, TCD trust began construction of the Blomvlei Library at Blomvlei Primary School in Hanover park in January 2010. Besides enormous increases in the building costs from the original quotes the construction was successfully completed in August 2010. The project has taken two years of fund raising and will need continued support through their developmental phase and the establishment of the various developmental programs which will be introduced at the school through the library.

The trust also repainted and renovated the children’s bathrooms at Baphumelele Educare, a pre-school and creche in the Khayelitsha township in Cape Town and will also be providing their annual Christmas Braai again this year for all the children and staff. The Trust is still paying the salaries for the two full time nurses at the HIV Respite Center in Khayalitcha, which the TCD Trust completed in 2007.

The Trust really try to get all projects to a point that once they have intervened and assisted projects, they can be self sustainable in order that the Trust can also help other worthwhile projects in need. Read about the projects which TCD has initiated and supported since its inception in 2004.
