The extraordinary landscape of Wadi Rum comes to life in today’s Video of the Week.
A vast and silent landscape of ancient riverbeds and stunning rock formations rising dramatically from the sand, Wadi Rum, Jordan has been made famous in famous films such as Lawrence of Arabia (where the theme music of today’s video is from). The Wadi’s unspoiled natural beauty makes it the perfect place to get back to nature, and the more adventurous can indulge in rock-climbing, trekking and 4×4 excursions.
Although it is an extremely arid region, Wadi Rum is also home to the semi-nomadic Bedouin people, who maintain a traditional lifestyle, living in goat-hair tents and tending their herds. What’s more, the clear night skies of Wadi Rum make it the ideal spot to view the Perseids Meteor Shower – one of the year’s astronomical highlights taking place in August this year.
For such a small country, Jordan certainly has a lot to offer, including nature reserves, The Dead Sea, the capital city of Amman and of course ancient ruins dating back thousands of years, including the Rose Red City of Petra – which this year celebrates its 200th anniversary of its rediscovery.
