James Bond Breakaways

Being a secret agent clearly has its perks. Obviously, there are the cars. Then there’s the gadgetry. Then there’s the expense account that will guarantee some memorable nights out. And of course there are the beautiful ladies. But as a secret agent like 007, there’s a good deal of travel involved too. True to form, the upcoming Bond thriller Skyfall visits some truly exotic destinations, and what better way to follow in Bond’s footsteps than with a city break? We can’t all have Aston Martins, incredible gadgets, or the satisfaction of saving the world (again) but a vodka martini in one of these amazing destinations will have you feeling pretty good nonetheless.

The Skyfall trailer has a heart-stopping shot of someone (presumably Bond) racing along on a motorbike with the distinctive turrets of the Blue Mosque of Istanbul in the background. See the famous mosque yourself (minus the fear of death) on our City of Sultans break to Istanbul. The only city to span two continents, Istanbul has no shortage of ancient marvels (like the Hagia Sofia, Topkapi Palace) and cultural attractions and is also proving its mettle in the art and design community. Don’t forget to check out the Grand Bazaar and test your bartering skills! It’s not the first time Bond has been to Istanbul – spot more famous sights in 1963’s From Russia With Love.

East and west, ancient and modern: Shanghai too is a place of cultural convergence. Although it has a colonial past, a mid-century reordering of all things economic and cultural along with the recent times of extraordinary growth make Shanghai a fascinating city to visit. Take in the views from Pudong or the distinctive Oriental Pearl TV Tower, visit the Bund for a taste of colonial grandeur, head to the Nanjing Road for a bit of shopping, or visit the Jade Temple and the old French Concession area. There is certainly no shortage of places to visit, or trendy bars in which to sample Bond’s tipple of choice on our Eye on Shanghai city break.

More city breaks

Although they don’t feature in the most recent Bond film, previous Bond adventures have taken our favourite secret agent to many exotic cities. Why not try:

St Pete’s Explored: St Petersburg, Russia. Featured in Goldeneye.
Pyramid City: Cairo, Featured in The Spy Who Loved Me
Marrakech & Ait Benhaddou: Morocco. Featured in The Living Daylights
