There’s something about sunsets…and we just can’t get enough of them! This week’s photo showcase is dedicated to simply stunning, breathtaking and awe-inspiring sunsets around the world. From the plains of Kenya’s Masai Mara and the hilltop Acropolis in Greece, to the unique formations of Arches National Park in the USA and Turkey’s Cappadocia, not to mention the relaxed affair of Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro – all of these sunsets are nothing short of remarkable.
Where is your favourite place to watch the sun set?
1. Masai Mara, Kenya
Without a doubt the most famous national park in Kenya, the Masai Mara is home to an abundance of wildlife and is the perfect place to spot the Big 5. Here travellers can also witness the famous annual migration of thousands of wildebeest, which is simply stunning sight to see at the sun sets.
2. The Acropolis, Greece
Sitting above Athens atop a rocky outcrop, the ancient citadel of Acropolis is perhaps one of the most famous monuments in the world. While it is incredible to see at any time of the day, we think it takes on a particular beauty when the lowering sun hits it just right in the late evening.
3. Arches National Park, USA
As the name suggests, Arches National Park is home to over 2000 natural stone arches in addition to soaring canyons and lofty sandstone towers. You can easily while away the hours in this stunning national park and come sunset witness as the rock formations change colour with the setting sun.
4. Cappadocia, Turkey
Whether you call them fairy chimneys, mushroom towers or phallic structures, the rock formations of Cappadocia are certainly unique. Seeing them at sunset against bathed in golden light against a multi-coloured sky will take your breath away!
5. Bagan, Burma
With hundreds of Buddhist pagodas dotting the horizon there is something quite magical about Bagan, no matter what time of day you visit. Sunrise and sunsets are particular favourites amongst travellers as the silhouettes of the pagodas against the setting sky make for a truly beautiful sight.
6. Marrakech, Morocco
The central market place of Djemaa el Fna is well known for being a hive of activity in the evening hours. Despite the hustle and bustle, seeing the square at dusk gives it a peaceful glow that, though only brief, allows you to see Djemaa el Fna in a whole new light.
7. Lake Tekapo, New Zealand
Perhaps one of the most iconic images of New Zealand, the Church of the Good Shepherd on the shores of Lake Tekapo on the South Island is amazingly picturesque. Surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps, it’s the perfect place to snap a photo or two.
8. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Come sunset in Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana is the place to be. People of all ages and walks of life flock to the beach to play football, catch the last flicker of sunlight, to drink, to chat, to while away the hours until nightfall when the party continues.
9. Varanasi, India
Every evening as dusk falls locals flock to the Dashashwamedh Ghat of the River Ganges in Varanasi to take part in an evening prayer. Even if you are not spiritual yourself, it is difficult not to be moved by this poignant ceremony.
10. Seljalandsfoss, Iceland
There is no denying the beauty of Iceland - winter or summer, spring or fall, you are bound to be amazing by its spectacular scenery. Seljalandsfoss waterfall is particularly striking, some even say one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world.
