Thailand is one of the most popular destinations in the world for visitors looking for exotic vacation spots and its capital city is a particular draw. Local statistics indicate that nearly three million guests arrive each year. The history of the ancient city dates back to the 15th century when it was merely a small village along the Chao Phraya River. Today this thriving metropolis boasts a population of more than 8 million people. City streets bustle day and night, gaining Bangkok the nickname of the “city that never sleeps”. While there are numerous famous city sites often frequented by tourists, there are also many unique things to do in Bangkok. Consider going off-the-beaten-path with these suggestions.
Cycling the Green Lung
Along with busy streets and high-rise structures, venturing along the peninsula in the Phra Pradaeng district brings you to an amazing, oasis-like, green space along the Chao Phraya River. Known as the “green lung” or the “jungle,” the tropical paradise features banana, coconut, mango and papaya trees. In addition, a network of paved pathways meander through the lush vegetation that welcomes visiting cyclists looking for outdoor-based activities to enjoy in Bangkok. If lucky enough to be here on the weekend, make a point of stopping at the riverside Bang Nam Pheung market.
Siriraj Medical Museum
Whether a fan of forensic science, the medical industry or just take delight in viewing the macabre, the Siriraj Medical Museum is worth a visit. Within its corridors, guests encounter some truly strange and often disturbing exhibits from giant testicles to mummified corpses. Although often attracting the curious public, the facility also serves as a valuable resource for medical students and professionals. The institute features five designated areas that contain exhibits based on anatomy, forensics, parasitology, pathology and prehistory.
Cabbages and Condoms
While having opulent Asian décor and offering a fine dining experience, the venue unmistakably advocates birth control. Located next to a local family planning facility, the Cabbages and Condoms restaurant is the brain child of family planning advocate Mechai Viravaidya. She opened the restaurant because traditionally, birth control was considered a taboo subject in Thailand. However, Viravaidya strove to heighten acceptance and understanding. Inside the restaurant, guests find that every corner of the dining environment features some concept of birth control. Mannequins don colourful clothing fashioned from prophylactics and contraceptive pills. Lamp shades, wall décor and other items all carry the reminder to engage in safe sex. Once diners finish their meal, in lieu of receiving mints, clients receive complimentary condoms.
The Snake Farm
Located in the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute, Thailand’s most famous snake farm houses a large variety of venomous and non-venomous species. Entertaining tours provide guests with the opportunity to see the reptiles up close and learn about each snake along with life-saving anti-venom therapies. The venue also contains an animal toxin clinic, which is staffed by licensed physicians, nurses and other medical personnel. The clinic provides care in the event of injuries resulting from insect and marine life. However, individuals with life-threatening conditions are immediately referred to local hospitals.
Escape Break Game Room
Looking for a bit of an adventure or a mental challenge in Bangkok? Then Escape Break is for you. The task involves locking two or more people in a specially-themed room. The guests must then find clues to solve the mystery and complete the mission before the end of the 60-minute time limit. Participants have the choice between a number of games revolving around different scenarios. Examples include an archaeological exploration, a ghost ship, and a deadly pathological outbreak. All of the rooms are in constant live surveillance in the event that guests need hints or an emergency exit.
